North Texas canceling baseball?
I was talking with a friend and he had heard the new UNT President has shut down the baseball revival at North Texas. My friend had talked with Villareal(however you spell it), AD at NT and he told him that.
Friend could be full of it, so I'm looking to see if any UNT fans know anything about this.

Seems this has been in discussion for some time. Here's a snippet from an article in late April.
North Texas officials are continuing to work toward reviving the school’s baseball program while the university sorts through financial issues that could delay its debut until 2016.
UNT athletic director Rick Villarreal, C. Dan Smith, the chairman of UNT’s capital campaign for athletics, and Don Lovelace, a co-chair of the university’s baseball steering committee, said late this week that the school remains committed to fielding a team.
“Baseball is still part of our plan,” Villarreal said. “Nothing has changed. We still have people who are committed to help financially with the stadium. We have to wait and see what our options are going to be as the university moves forward.”

I hope that's not true, but it wouldn't surprise me. There's egg on the face of the UNT administrations accounting practices right now (which is strange given that UNT has a very good accounting program).
While the money to start and revive baseball by state law cannot be taken from academics, the perception that UNT would be starting/reviving baseball at a time when there is some financial turmoil would be a lot to try to explain.
Long story short: it's not far fetched, but I have no way to confirm your rumor.

RE: North Texas canceling baseball?
here is a more recent article
http://www.star-telegram.com/2014/06/05/...ubles.html
Some small-scale construction projects and will be put off, and the athletics department will also have to cut back while doing more, he said.
I can't imagine they will move forward at this point since this incident puts them about 110 million in the hole AND they are facing reduced state funding in the future VS the past because they are now no longer going to be counting the ineligible employees as eligible and thus their state funding will be lower
the last years of counting ineligible employees it was up to about 7.5 million per year or 15 million per state biannual allocation
so they have 83.5 million they will most likely have to pay back to the state over the next several years and they have 7.5 million per year less they will be getting VS in prior years (keeping all other things equal) and they have 23 million in "booked revenues" that are false and they have 5.9 million in overstated cash reserves and they have 1.35 million in auditing expenses related to sorting all of this out
their bonds have been placed in a negative watch for potential downgrade and there are multiple issues associated with that besides just this financial issue (though the financial issue is one of the main ones) and they were already prepared to take a bond downgrade before all of this came about to construct new dorms so I can't see how they would justify starting baseball and building a stajium when they are most likely already going to have a bond downgrade and they have some major financial issues to deal with across the university
and then there are "system" issues that are most likely going to materialize as well that will play a part in all of this since it is the "system" that is issuing bonds and the system itself is pretty tapped out and their Denton cash cow having major financial issues does not help that at all

hey fake SMU guy!
I was incorrect it was 15 million PER YEAR they were taking in excess in the last few years

when you are repeatedly told there are major issues at a university and you choose to ignore them this is what happens especially when you churn through leadership that is just there to take up space and breath air

RE: North Texas canceling baseball?
Last I heard, the baseball program should be back around 2016. I believe the program would have been back sooner if it were not for the current issues facing the university administration. One thing I know for sure is baseball will be back soon. Recently our AD stated that the athletic department was moving forward from concept designs to architectural plans. Could the start of baseball get pushed back another year if the financial issues turn out to be worse? Sure, but baseball is still returning to North Texas, and I think we still hit our 2016 goal.
