RE: Memorial Day
In my and my husband's family, we know full well the sacrifice:
Civil War
James DeMore - husbands gggrandfather
Jacob Shover - my gggrandfather
Timothy Ridgeway - husbands gggrand uncle
WWI
William Neumann, Jr - my grandmother's cousin (5 days before the Armistice)
WWII
Thomas A DeMore - my husband's uncle and namesake (buried Normandy-American Cemetery)
Vietnam
Kenneth E DeMore, Jr - husband's 2nd cousin
Thank you to one and all, for the ultimate sacrifice.

RE: Memorial Day
Interesting Mom. I can tell that someone in your family likes genealogy...my family does as well.
My Mother had a relative (T.C. Harwell) that was one of the first....if not the first....killed at Shiloh. A fellow soldier wrote his parents, telling them, the first shot he heard, he saw T.C. reaching for his head as he fell.
My father had relatives that died in the civil war on both sides.
In the wars since, our families have been fortunate. Several purple hearts, but no deaths.
We owe it to them to remember.

I wish that you would have posted this yesterday.....my girlfriend has been in Paris for the past week, and went to Normandy today, for the Memorial day events. I could have had her look for his marker and get a pic. :(

RE: Memorial Day
Years ago my FIL sent for his information and passed it down to us. We have a huge map with the grave location marked...along with this inset:
My husband's aunt is the only family member to have ever visited there. My FIL was in the Navy/Pacific.

RE: Memorial Day
I'm glad you have that.
I tried to post a couple of pics of Normandy from today....but me, or my iPad doesn't do pics well. One of us is too old.
I'll post them tomorrow.

RE: Memorial Day
I made it back. I medevac'd too many who didn't (Operation Iraqi Freedom). This is a very melancholy holiday for me... not a celebration. If you've ever loaded (with full military honors) a 22 year old Airman 1st Class' remains onto a C-17 in an aluminum box in a hostile fire zone, filled with her body and ice you'd know what I mean. This day is about HER, not ME (or any others of us who made it back home alive).
GOD BLESS AMERICA.

RE: Memorial Day
CajunNation, thanks for starting this thread. I myself, am a Viet Nam Veteran(1st Field Force VN, Field Artillery), but to this day I am still in awe of the World War II Veterans who sacrificed so much for our country, those that never made it back, those that have passed on, and those who are still with us. Never, ever forget what they did for all of us. Especially my uncles who served in WWII:
Uncle Tony (US Army, Germany)
Uncle Al (US Army, Egypt)
Uncle Mick (US Army, Germany under Patton)
Uncle Charles (US Navy, South Pacific)
Uncle Charlie (US Marines)
And to Fanof49ASU for the Normandy pictures. I visited Normandy three years ago. With tears in their eyes, the French people in those towns still thank us (American tourists) for what we(our country) did for them.
"For those who have fought for it, Freedom has a taste the protected will never know."
