Head Tulane Baseball Coach Rick Jones retires
Because of his health he is leaving the program. Tulane will do a nationwide search for a new coach. Rick Jones has taken Tulane to the College World Series twice and for one year we were the number one college baseball program in the nation for the great majority of the year.
I hope our AD consults with the Rice,Vandy,LSU and TCU coaches for input. Also with Skip Bertman the dean of college baseball in Louisiana and maybe the nation. It is difficult for a top academic private school to compete at top levels but Rice,Vandy,TCU etc. seem to do it every year and reload!

Gautreau has made it clear he wants the job as Jones’ successor, and he will be a candidate. But Illinois State coach Mark Kingston, who was Jones’ assistant from 2002-08, might be the front-runner. Kingston is an outstanding recruiter with experience as a successful mid-major head coach, as he has led Illinois State to school records for wins in two of his first four seasons as head coach.

Mississippi assistant Cliff Godwin, who has recruiting ties from his days on LSU’s staff, could be another strong contender. The usual collection of top assistants could all garner consideration, including Louisville’s Chris Lemonis, North Carolina’s Scott Forbes, Virginia’s Kevin McMullan and Mississippi State’s Butch Thompson. Sam Houston State head coach David Pierce, a proven recruiter in Conference USA during his days at Rice, would be another great target.

This is the guy that can keep the TULANE program running on all cylinders. Nab Pierce and enjoy another great run.

RE: Head Tulane Baseball Coach Rick Jones retires
It is a no brainer. The Tulane AD will consult with these schools because they are the top academic private universities with top 25 baseball programs, such as Rice,Vandy and TCU. Our AD Rick Dickson has already asked their advice as per a recent text message from him. He also consults with Coach Skip Bertman, one of the most highly respected college baseball coaches in Louisiana and the nation and a true gentleman. Gauthreau has zero chance of getting the Tulane job. He was the hitting coach last year and brought the team batting average in at approximately .226 within the bottom five out of 300 division one baseball schools in the country.Mark Kingston also has zero chance as he is from a lowly conference, bottom ranked academic school and baseball program,Eastern Illinois, never heard of them! Our new head coach at Tulane will be one of the top up and coming coaches in the nation based on a thorough nationwide search. Book it!

Book it? Is that the same book as the in-the-bank field goal from the 40 yard line?

Why do you not get back to your Sun Belt board and stop being a troll on this AAC board in knocking one of the top academic universities in the nation,Tulane University of Louisiana which is now a full member of the AAC on this web site!

Savacool, I can assure you Gautreau and Kingston have a legitimate shot at the job. While there is a lot of interest in the opening, this will not be a quick decision. Some names circulating will be playing for a couple of weeks.

They will be considered for their Tulane connection I agree but as I have said Gautreau has shown me nothing in the second half of last season in leadership as the temporary head coach and as a hitting coach as Tulane was in the bottom 5 of the 300 Division 1 baseball teams in the nation. Kingston has been the head coach of a team in a lowly conference playing against poor competition. Rick Dickson will put all his feelers out for advise and hire the best college coach available in the country that can successfully recruit blue chip players to a private academic school such as Tulane and again take us yearly to NCAA tournament play.

It appears from your posts that you are a "younsta" so I'll let you slide. You do realize that this "lowly conference" that Kingston coaches in is rated higher in the RPI this year and has been for the last 3 years than both CUSA and the American?

Tulane's baseball program hasn't been running on all cylinders in almost a decade, since Katrina.

They need someone to fix it.

They haven't been horrible either. But yes, they need tweaks to return to prominence imo.

and according to that baseball america article, the tweak is a better financial aid package to match those of the other private baseball powers.
