Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
I didn't mention UAB because I thought that was an obvious worst on the planet venue.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Best: Bama by far. Greatest bunch of fans I've ever encountered. They were very hospitable and genuinely curious to learn about our team. They gave us a lot of respect for our efforts (both on the field and in the stands) and we made some fans that day.

UF isn't far behind. Lot of nice people, and a lot of respect for our team and our fans. I'm not sure that they've ever had a OOC fanbase come in there and be as loud and crazy as we were.

Worst: UGA....I went in 2004 and vowed to never go back. My IQ decreased by the minute due to the stupidity I was surrounded by. The older fans I met that morning were great, but everyone that was caught up in the Herschel days I could do without.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Best was Tulane.
Game was great.
I got to see the Dome again.
And before and after parties in the Quarter are always fun.

Worst Ever Away Game...
The Wiregrass Classic.
I drove to Dothan to watch us play Edward Waters.
The town was a dump. The game was a blow out.
The only good part was Purple Thunder.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
I use to work and travel with the AstAte football team from 2008-2012 so I have quite a few to share. So without further adieu...

SUNBELT CONFERENCE:

La-La: Boy will get you get an earful and irritate the hell outta some cajuns if you call them anything BUT Louisiana but damn, that is the best tailgating (in terms of atmosphere, food and activities) in the whole conference. The fans are quite inviting up until kick-off, then get pretty mouthy. Stadium is pretty cool and lafayette is a fun town like to experience more in the future.

South Alabama: Mobile is very fun city and have mad respect for the university officials at South Al. Fans are very approachable and helpful. Ladd Peebles definitely not in the nicest part of town and really shows it's age, along with the visiting locker-room (cramped and leaky). The neighborhood felt more uninviting than the Jaguar nation.

Troy: Troy has the best press box facility in the conference (IMO). The city itself doesn't off much in entertainment and tailgating seemed scattered. The biggest problem I had in terms of getting bad mouthed and smacked talked to was from the band of all people.

ULM: I have been to Monroe and Malone stadium the most out of all the current and former conference members and I have to say...really hit and miss here lol. The stadium is definitely old, and one trip down there, their was tall, saw grass that was growing underneath the GA side that reached 5-6 rows up. The crowds, though small many of the times, had the ROWDIEST STUDENT section of the league, often times being extremely vulgar and borderline racist to players. The city itself is quaint, and I had quite few entertaining night trips with ULM employees and officials.

FORMER SBC Members:
North Texas: I unfortunately never got to go to the new stadium, just fouts field (WHICH WAS A DUMP-THE PRESS BOX WAS LIKE AN EXTREMELY MINIATURE VERSION OF AstAte's Press Box! NOT TO MENTION THE VIEW FROM THE STANDS WAS EXTREMELY FAR). But man...without a doubt the most fun night outing was in the Denton/Dallas area. Enough Said. Never had any problems with the fans because I saw VERY FEW.

MTSU: The 'skillet' is one of the more unique stadiums I've been to (in terms of design). Enjoyed visiting their museum they have for athletics traffic in Murfreesboro was TERRIBLE. Fans were small but douches.

WKU: Their press box SUCKS...ABSOLUTELY SUCKS. The new grandstand they constructed was nice. The crowd/tailgating was virtually non existent when we traveled there in December and it was EXTREMELY COLD. Very lovely campus I will say.

FIU: While the trip outside the actual game was a very memorable one (caught a Heat game that friday night during Lebron's first season in Miami and the night life is definitely active) the FIU experience was terrible. The stadium still sucks despite it's renovations-the home/visiting coaching "booths" were actually tents and foldout tables set up on top of the extremely tiny, 4-5 room press box. This game in particular was pretty much for FIU to clinch a share of the SBC title and a bowl bid and no one was there. The few that were there actually set off the fire alarms/water sprinkler system after their victory.

THE OTHER PLACES:
Southern Miss: Was there in december of 07 and they were in the middle of constructing their endzone seating area. Their stadium reminded me of a slightly larger/nicer centennial bank stadium. Some golden eagle fans were cordial others were definitely trash talkers.

Texas A&M: I was there when in the first game as the Red Wolves, ASU upset the aggies 18-14. Even in defeat and before the game, Aggies nation was one of the friendliest, nicest group of fans I've ever met. During my whole time their, I was absolutely flabbergasted by the sheer size of college station, the campus and the stadium itself. I remember leaning to a friend and telling them "this is borderline SEC/NFL atmosphere." If you ever get a chance, catch a game at Kyle Field.

Nebraska: THE LOUDEST PLACE i've to this day experienced a game. Cornhuskers are extremely passionate about their team and they'll let the visitors now it. Had an opportunity to tour their offices and trophy case room and it was simply incredible. I will say their's some pretty bad seats in the corner endzone seating areas, but still an awesome place. Lincoln was a pretty laid back yet fun mellow going city.

Iowa: First off, Hawkeye fans are A-HOLES. Remind me of Razorback fans (very self entitled and smug). Stadium was quite nice though I had to film in the "visiting coaching teams booth"...which was literally a deer stand bolted at the very top of the endzone. Iowa City was actually kind of lame because (as I also found out in Lincoln) many mid-westerns actually turn in and close up shop at about 10-1100 and will wake up at 430 to start boozing and tailgating.

Virginia Tech: Very steep stadium! Hokies fans are almost virtually on top of you. Their third down call to rally the fans is literally a turkey gobbling..kind of odd but unique. The pressbox is extremely nice and seeing "Enter Sandman" in person was very, very cool. Seeing the memorial for the victims of the Virginia Tech massacre was very humbling.

Memphis: ...I hate memphis. I hate the city of Memphis, I hate Memphis fans and I hate the Liberty bowl (it's located in the extremely shady party of the city and though it's large, you can tell its a 40+ old stadium. Next to ULM fans, the Tigers student section was VERY rambunctious and you think of every curse and slur words and put them together, and they screamed it at the team.
(SIDE NOTE: I was also there for the 2010 liberty bowl and was right in the middle of the ECU Pirate section. To this day it is the coldest I've ever been at a football game and boy did Pirate fans make Razorback fans look classy....wow.)

Louisville: Louisville was extremely fun, both the city and the gameday experience. Cardinals fans invited me on an old train caboose that had been converted into a tailgating party area which was very sweet and fun. Papa John's stadium was undergoing an upper deck construction at the time, yet the stadium was still extremely impressive. The crowd was surprisingly small, but probably thanks to the fact they can sell beer at their games were quite spirited lol.

Auburn: I have pretty high respect for Auburn-they have some very classy officials working on the Plains and they definitely showed myself and other staff members a good time in Auburn. The stadium, though old, is very impressive in terms of size. It's one of the very few places where I've experienced an open air press box. Tiger fans are quite passionate, but for the most cordial and jesus...their war eagle that fly's onto the field is FREAKIN huge.

Arkansas: Having several family members being U of A graduates, I've been to quite a few of Hogs games in both Fayetteville and Little Rock. In Fayetteville, tailgating-though very very abundant-is extremely spread out and isolated due to the crappy parking situation on and off campus. Students wanting the best seats in the student section start lining up at 2:00 pm for a 7:00 pm kickoff (crazy!). I will say DW Reynolds is a very nice stadium and the video board is quite impressive. Having been to A&M and Auburn, the fans and atmosphere puts Arkansas to shame.
LITTLE ROCK i have to admit is crazy fun and crazy...crazy in Little Rock. For those that don't know, stadium and city officials let fans tailgate literally on a golf course that surrounds war memorial stadium and it's borderline close to mardi gras for rednecks.

UCA: Finally, my sister attended UCA and I visited her one weekend for a game in Conway. Though it was small yet quaint, their's definitely a HUGE difference in both fan support, tailgating and overall game atmosphere between UCA and ASU. I felt as if I was at a glorified high school game...with drinking and baggo.

BONUS: MOST ANNOYING TEAM CHANT EVER: Oklahoma State
"ORANGE!....POWER!..."

.......

BONUS: HIGHLY AMMUSING MASCOT: ARMY's insanely ripped Mule.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Best Away:

Navy - For all reasons mentioned earlier. You can just feel the tradition and history.

Honorable mention:

Wofford - "Paulson North". Had fun bringing more fans to their stadium than they did in 2010.

We like rushing the field, too...

Worst Away:

UGA - Army of Walmartians everywhere. Drunk, obnoxious, "obviously never went to college" fans in a sea of red. Tailgating and parking requires inside knowledge and a very early set up. Every time we go, we always finds some random patch of grass to post up. Long walk to the stadium.

I get truly irritated when a middle-aged, pot-bellied woman wearing a fanny pack and jean shorts claims that "they" are going to beat the **** out of "y'all's little school full of UGA wannabes".

I must say, that every alumni I spoke to was very gracious and had great things to say about Southern. Most wanted us to do well and even wanted us in FBS (before announcement). "I'll pull for y'all any day of the week, unless you guys are playing us."

The NCAA sent us a strongly worded letter for this after Wofford whined about us taking over their stadium. Because of our fans, they changed their ticketing policy the next year......it boggles my mind that we did that. All visitor and the sides on the home side were all GA up until this game. After that, every seat was reserved....they didn't want us to do it to them again. Stands were full an hour before kickoff, and to anyone who's ever been to Gibbs Stadium, that's a feat that hasn't been seen before or since. It was amazing.

Worst - When App State beat South Carolina in Columbia years ago thought I was
going to be killed just getting out of the stadium.

Best - Too many to really determine. You're always in high cotton when you are
watching the Mountaineers. Guess would have been an old Marshall game where
we beat them in Huntington because they just couldn't stop us.

The best time I've ever had at an App away game was actually a basketball game at VCU.

My worst was Elon, but then again I never went to a game at Wofford.

For me outside SBC had to be Arkansas people were so nice to us made me sick and they were the same way after they beat us made me sicker

SBC has to be Ark St my military buddies had us set up pretty darn good.

Worst hands down has to be LSU to think they would treat fellow Louisiana residence like that is pathetic oh wait they treat everyone like that.

Reminds me of when I went to Montana. They were so nice. Almost to the point where I was sickened by their generosity and nicety. After we left the game, I left, walked straight to the hotel, not saying a word to anyone.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Best for me, without a doubt would have to have been our game vs. UF this past year. Met up w/ roughly 10 of my Pi Kapp brothers, some of whom I hadn't seen in 22 years ... capped off with a win ... hard to beat. NDSU in their dome is pretty hard to beat as well, despite the fact they sent us home with losses both times.

Past that, pretty much any of the seven I-AA/FCS National Championship games I attended that Georgia Southern was in (missed the 1st one in 1985) were phenomenal. Most of the games vs. Appalachian have been solid atmospheres in Boone, save 1987 when I about froze to death 03-wink

Worst ones are far easier to remember and most of the time it was because practically no one was there. Too many of those the last few years in the SoCon, and games @ Samford and @ Elon are particularly dull.

Here's a shot I took six minutes before kickoff at the GSU-Elon game with their ten member band playing the National anthem. There were less than 300 Elon fans at the game, in my estimation.

I give James Madison this parting gift .. Hope they enjoy their travels to Burlington 03-wink

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Worst- Georgia Southern in 2011. Frat guys backed into our car within two minutes of parking. If I told you everything that their fans said to us my comment would likely be blocked from the board but one of the cleaner comments someone threatened to rip my buddies jersey off and slit his throat.... They were classless jerks the entire time and I was so glad to get a win and get out of Statesboro. GS fans that I've met in Boone have been great however but there's a sour taste in my mouth about many of their fans.

Best- Virginia Tech. Fans were great. Very respectful even though we took a dreadful beat down on the field that day. Also very solid all around gameday atmosphere.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Worst - UGA, easily. Hard to navigate/tailgate downtown Athens on a game day. They trash their own campus so badly the president gets involved. And the fan base is generally worthless. Wife went to the concession stands one time mid game, and had to yarf (a pregnancy yarf). She told me no one tried to help and that a couple of 'fans' just started barking loudly in her face saying "If you can take the heat, stay out of the dawg-pound! Woof woof woof!"

Best - Appy. Not because of the fans or anything, we have a tenuous relationship with them at best. The women folk are 'meh.' There is a stinkin track around KBS that blows. But damn Boone for being a beautiful place to visit and watch a game. I do love me some mountains.

I think he means 2012. That's the same year I took my first trip to Paulson. Like I said I don't recall a single ill word being said in my direction. Granted, we went straight from an App tailgate, to a GaSo alumni lot, to the stadium.

I will admit I was disappointed in the stadium's size and atmosphere. Paulson looks WAY bigger in pictures than it does in real life and all this time I thought Paulson was on par with The Rock in noise and atmosphere and it really wasn't even close.

It was still a good experience for me though and I will be back. Can't beat a night in Savannah and a day of rivalry football.

RE: Best (and Worst) Away Game Experience
Best that I have been to : Michigan was the best win however the atmosphere from 100,000+ was not impressive. Montana was as loud as anywhere I have been. The stadium is right on top of you and the mountians keep the noise in. I really enjoyed the Virginia Tech tailgate and pre game. We left the tailgate a little late and were under the student section as Enter Sandman came on. I thought the stands were going to fall on us. The game however was over by the end of the 1st quarter.

Worst: South Carolina. I went in the mid to late 80's when App had Sparky Woods coaching. We were bad mouthed by every fan on the way to the stadium (including a 90 year old lady). The tailgating was terrible. The best part of the game was (memory foggy but think this is right) Leonard Lee laying out one of their recievers (may have been Sterling Sharpe) and the whole crowd going silent and then Leonard stood over him with the crossed arms. I thought we might not make it out of the visiting section alive. Sparky went on to coach South Carolina and a guy named Jerry Moore came to take his place. I think he won a few games at App. :)

I've been to a game at USC before. The actual game and atmosphere were absolutely fantastic! Pre-game with the students is truly something special.

Everything else about the event was miserable. Tailgating was awful, the sea of concrete is so bleh, just felt too sterile. I just don't feel like I am at a college football game unless there's grass around.
