Interesting polling data from Arkansas
Asked who their favorite college team was,
51% picked the Hogs
13% AState
5% UALR

Now get those 148,000 UALR fans and 385,000 AState fans in the stands!

RE: Interesting polling data from Arkansas
Web polling a couple of years ago estimated we had about 320,000 self-identifying fans. Troy was estimated about the same. This poll seems to have generated similar results.

I would say this is encouraging news for stAte. We are similar with one monolithic university that every fry cook and cashier is a fan. It's about winning the hearts and minds. That takes decades or a national championship. I would say stAte is moving on up! Does UALR really have 148,000 fans???? I forget that school is even there.

Second in state not bad. Auburn and Alabama of course loom heavily over Troy/USA. Irritates the crap out of me when someone comes to a Troy game wearing an Alabama or Auburn shirt .

Frankly, I am shocked that only 51% self-identified as Razorback fans. I knew that support was a mile-wide and an inch deep but 51% was surprising.

There were probably more, but they couldn't figure out how to complete the poll questionnaire.

Doesn't surprise me, the Nate Silver estimate in 2011 pegged Arkansas fan support at 990,000 but this poll would tab it at 1.5 million. That would mean at least a third of those self-identifying aren't big enough fans to have been picked up by Silver's data.

Silver's data in 2011 would have been based on 2010 when Arkansas was coming off a 10-3 season while AState was coming off consecutive 4-8.

Also looking at google data which is often used to gauge fan interest, astate is more searched than Arkansas state red wolves, few researchers would look for AState.

Agree, hate this. I call out my classmates for this behavior. Here it's tech/uva. I tell them "hey, you can transfer if you want" and they tend to give me some sob story about how they grew up a tech fan.

Usually it is "my dad and uncles are all blah blah fans".

I ask "would they stop bouncing you on their knee if you grew up and became a fan of your own school?"

Dynamics of Arkansas make it interesting. If you voted for ASU in this poll, chances are, you actually self identify as a fan. So many times in a poll like this, they just automatically click Razorbacks and move on without even thinking twice.

RE: Interesting polling data from Arkansas
I think it's more interesting that a couple D2? schools combine to have as many fans as ASU. Not only that but there's 18% of the fans left unaccounted for which I guess means they are fans of a team not in the state...most likely LSU.

Very surprising since there are only 2 FBS football programs in the state of Ark and one is 3 time defending SBC champs.

The remainder is more than likely are some combination of Henderson, Ouachita Baptist, Hendrix, Lyon, SAU, UAM, Arkansas Tech, Harding plus any out of state fans.

Razorback fans claim that ASU has 5 fans and UCA has 10 fans.

They also claim that Jonesboro has an overwhelming majority of Razorback fans. Which is part of why I find the fact that only 51% statewide self-identified as Razorback fans humorous.

Spoken like someone who doesn't listen to what passes for sports tv, sports radio, and newspaper coverage. We have a TV station that devotes all of its sportscast to the Hogs. No NFL no MLB no other colleges. Newspaper editors have said why would cover what less than 5% audience cares about.

How many times is the LSU or a coach quoted saying everyone in the state is a tiger or the Louisiana is lucky having only one school or team.

It flies in the face of the media and UA claims about the state. Everyone is a hog no 51%

Just about every day. Not in those words; but something to the effect that everybody in Louisiana is an lsu fan first, then whatever other little school might be in his town.

Its simply an observation, don't get insulted buddy. I know what passes for sports coverage in my state, why would I care what passes for sports coverage in the Little Rock and Jonesboro markets? Seems to me you've taken a small poll sample and are running with it in jubilation. Was this poll taken in every medium sized market in Arkansas?

80% of respondents were reached by phone with an internet sampling taken to account for people unreachable by phone (ie. no listed number such as cell). But they were selected polling subjects, not a "hey everyone come fill out my online poll and tell your friends".

In Arkansas they say it in EXACTLY those words. A few years ago thousands of high school students in Arkansas received a letter to recruit them as students and the letter stated "Arkansas is the only Division I athletic program in the state."

Seems to me you've taken a small poll sample and are running with it in jubilation. Was this poll taken in every medium sized market in Arkansas?

So you won't get insulted when fans who have never lived in Louisiana (I have) don't "get" your name fight?

Because what LSU does is most certainly not UArk does nor does Louisiana media act like Arkansas media.

When AState started the move back to I-A several media outlets were told that if they over covered the move they'd lose access.

Hell back when Nolan Richardson was head coach the editor of the state's largest paper wrote about watching summer pick-up games on campus with Nolan. The next morning he wrote a lengthy article basically saying everything he wrote the day before mis-represented what actually happened that they didn't actually sit and watch them they just saw them a for a few seconds when passing through to another place because his column described an out-right no argument about violation of NCAA rules. He chose to declare himself a liar before harming "the program".

This is a relatively large poll sample and it wasn't a self-selected poll, it was done using demographic data to create a cross-section of the state.

But hey we get scientific data that confirms earlier estimates (Silver's data, a locally done poll from years earlier) that AState's ratio of fans to UArk fans is roughly 4 to 1.

If this were a simple poll standing alone it would be one thing but confirms other data.
