Interesting? Not really..there only two FBS programs in the entire state.

Spoken like someone who doesn't listen to what passes for sports tv, sports radio, and newspaper coverage. We have a TV station that devotes all of its sportscast to the Hogs. No NFL no MLB no other colleges. Newspaper editors have said why would cover what less than 5% audience cares about.

How many times is the LSU or a coach quoted saying everyone in the state is a tiger or the Louisiana is lucky having only one school or team.

It flies in the face of the media and UA claims about the state. Everyone is a hog no 51%

Its simply an observation, don't get insulted buddy. I know what passes for sports coverage in my state, why would I care what passes for sports coverage in the Little Rock and Jonesboro markets? Seems to me you've taken a small poll sample and are running with it in jubilation. Was this poll taken in every medium sized market in Arkansas?

It is a neutral poll by PublicPolicyPolling as a side-question in what was primarily a political poll. Margin of error is 3.4%

The poll seems to have overweighted Republican primary voters a little bit....which might mean a bit of a Northwest Arkansas bias.

And...If you don't care. Try another thread.

Again, you guys are thinned skinned as any Cajun fan on this board. You can take this poll five different times and come out with a different result every time. My two points are there are only two FBS programs in Arkansas and as someone else stated, two FBS programs are closely ranked behind Astate and combined have as many fans. Two things are apparent in this poll, Arkansasa has less support then advertised and in spite of recent success, state's brand is not much greater than several FCS programs. Sorry if you are insulted by that.

Well, only two have been done. This one and Nate Silver's and they both have similar results. You'll pardon me if I put more weight on their numbers and margin of error. Your sample size is currently 1.

Also, just because someone thinks you are full of it doesn't mean they are insulted. They just think you are full of it.

Really an amazing poll to me and flies in the face of the media argument that everyone in the State of Arkansas is a hog fan. So despite the constant media bombardment of hogism on the radio, TV, and newspapers only about half of the State considers themselves hog fans. Hog fans only outnumber ASU fans 4-1. You would think it is 100-1 based on the media. They only outnumber UALR fans 10-1, despite the fact that we don't have a football team and basically have no fans outside of Central Arkansas. Of course, this poll will be ignored by the media who are deathly afraid of offending UAF in any way.

This tells me that both our schools have an untapped pool of fans that need to be engaged properly.

I have less of a problem at USA with it.

We're new. A natural source of new fans are college football fans in the Mobile area. They will have a preference of Alabama or Auburn (even I do - although I wear a USA shirt to Jags games).

When I see those fans, I'm glad they're at the game and hope they'll be bigger supporters of USA football as the program improves.

I would hope we didn't see those shirts in our student section though. Although our students appear to only show up until halftime anyway.

We advertise to Razorback fans, but will give anyone who shows up to a game in a Razorback shirt all sorts of trouble.

The reality is, we've never had a large fan base. Because of our market, and the way media works here, its almost impossible for us to grow fans outside of alums of the school.

People seemed surprised that a high percentage self identify as FCS fans. Well that's how Arkansas works. You either cheer for the Razorbacks, or you cheer for whichever instate school that you went to. Rarely do you cross school lines. Those who didn't go to school instate become Razorback fans by nature because the media pretty much makes it the only choice.

Again, to some, the poll would be surprising for an out of staters who don't understand anything about how things work in Arkansas. T us, its a positive sign that flies in the face of the Argument that 95 percent of the state are Razorback fans.

RE: Interesting polling data from Arkansas
An wide spread support for the "state" school will fade a little in years that team is not relevant nationally. Take this poll 2011 after a 11-2 football season or after a 25+ win basketball season along with a sweet 16 and there's no doubt the Ark numbers goes up. That's going to happen in most states. The question then becomes where do those fans come from, the fans that answered none of the above, the fans from the smaller schools, or will ASU take the biggest hit since they are the only other D1 school in the state. It will probably be across the board with each losing 1 to 2 % with ASU probably taking at least a 2% drop and maybe 2.5 because they have the second highest numbers and the only other FBS football school.

If this was a poll in KY did after the basketball season uk's numbers would be up...if it was last year UofL's numbers would increase....

we all have a large % of fans that wants to follow a winner

I think we can all agree on that. I know we have a lot of marginal fans who gravitated toward the evil empire when UL football and basketball were both down. Many of those are leaning more toward the Cajuns the last couple of years. The idea is to sustain success for an extended period [10 years or more] to cultivate a larger diehard base.

All true. Especially if you do nothing to capitalize.

The main gist of the thing is that you've got to identify these people and start making it easy for them to engage with your school.

In particular we need to get these people to publicly identify themselves with our schools. Even if only a bumper sticker on a few thousand additional cars.
