Who owns the name "Big 14"?

To my knowledge that hasn't been pattented. 04-cheers

Big 12 ought to file on it then! 04-cheers

Actually, I could be wrong but I believe that the Big 12 does own the rights to the Big 14 name.

Nice to know information there. Now the only question is; what's it gonna be 2, 4 or 6? 07-coffee3

For the time being, zero is the most likely answer.

I'm heading to Atlanta at the end of August. But I can find girls in bikini's everywhere in the summer. Florida doesn't have an exclusive there. Besides, the wife walks around with nothing on all the time. I find that tops bikinis any day.

And the B12 told BYU thanks but no thanks, too. It looks like 10 is the number.

RE: If I was the Commissioner I would....
I think that part of the equation is also determined by how the conference views the current 10 team setup. Leaving economics aside, from a purely competitive standpoint I think that a lot of people in the Big 12 do genuinely like the round-robin scheduling. Play everyone once in football, and twice in basketball. It's nice and clean, it means you see everybody in the conference every year (which reduces the chance for schisms to form among divisional lines) and it does give a true conventional champion. Sure, the whole thing may have come about because of losses sustained by the conference, but it's a good setup to have.

So if it's good from the competitive aspect, that leaves economics. Yes, it's true that ultimately the networks will pay less overall for the Big 12's rights, because after all there is simply less inventory than there is in 12 or 14 team leagues. However, you can offset the impact of the smaller overall rights deal by splitting that smaller pie into fewer slices, and ultimately what a given school receives is more important to its leadership than what the overall conference deal is worth. And if you're going to be a sports league with a limited footprint, having a very strong base in Texas is probably the best place to be.

I'd never say that the Big 12 is in as strong of a position as the B1G, SEC, or PAC. But like the ACC, it has strengths to balance its flaws, and like the ACC it is probably more viable than many of its detractors believe it to be. Bob Stoops finally got a big win to end his season last year, and we'll see what Charlie Strong can do at Texas - if he can bring that brand back to prominence on the field, it will also do a lot for the perception of the conference nationally.

I agree, Phog. Let the other conferences have their massive inventory of games to sell, many of which aren't worth watching. Let them have their unequal scheduling, which favors some teams, and not others. Nobody in B12 country cares.

05-stirthepot End of the day, I think the B12 will have to add two teams soon. I keep hearing that only conference champions (winners of conference playoff game) will be allowed in the four team playoff. This will force Notre Dame to join ACC football and the B12 to add two.

Why would it matter how many teams we have? At the end of the day we still would play 9 conference games just like the SEC or ACC.

You have to have 12 for a championship game. 07-coffee3

Says you... I'll wait and see what the people who get paid to deal with this conference nonsense have to say about it.

There is no move to require a conference championship game as a prerequisite for the college football playoff, except in the minds of the expansionistas around here. IMO the expansionistas are sheep heading for the slaughter, and they're unable to see that there are other options than ending up as lamb chops.

After what the college football playoff committee decided who would be in the playoff the Big 12 should be on the phone with BYU, Colorado State, New Mexico, and Wyoming. They need a conference title game.
