2,3,4 ahead of Troy have never beat Larry Blakeney, have never won the conference, have never been to a bowl, combine to have less players in the NFL, and have never had a better FBS record than Troy. Pure conjecture at this point.

Hard to argue about Joey Jones. Let's face it, there was no way we were gonna beat Troy our transitional year in 2012. Ignoring that game we only have one matchup as FBS opponents, which was last year. USA could have won that game, but Coach Jones made mistakes and was outcoached by Coach Blakeney. I would switch 4 and 5 at this point.

2 has played Troy once as HC @ TXST. You (and I am sure they are) have to take into account his previous stints @ TCU, 'bama and A&M. It's not all about what he has done at TXST.
This will be his first season with all his recruits. There are only a handful of seniors that redshirted and are not his. Let's see what happens going forward.

We also may have died down the stretch last season but we did become Bowl Eligible in our first full FBS season

This will be Hud's first season with four year seniors. I don't know if we have any carry overs that redshirted the year before he arrived.

IMO the Troy coach is in fact being punished for losing ground over the past three years. Again has he plateaued and now heading for a permanent valley. I think so, time will tell.

Isn't that pretty standard? He hasn't proven he is a good head coach. Not saying he won't be, but he hasn't done anything yet. There are lots of great coordinators that have bombed after moving to a head coach position.

Thing is, they ranked him ahead of Paul Petrino, but behind Todd Berry and Dennis Franchione. That's what made no sense. Berry, Franchione, and Trent Miles have proven little as a head coach, yet they were ranked ahead of him.

Just seemed rather arbitrary.

In Miles' defense, he has turned around 1 team in his career. But then he walked into a dumpster fire at gstate though.

Did y'all see Ga State in 2012. I'm talking about a team that went 1-11 versus FCS competition. And that 1-11 record was masking some epic beatdowns.

Georgia State this year was competitive in 4 games. Including 2 on the road. Against FBS competition. And Georgia State was really starting at less than FBS Year one because of the timing of their moveup. Last year's team had no FBS recruited players. USA had it much easier in that they knew in 2009 that they were going FBS and when that would happen. It makes it much easier to recruit.

If I'm Georgia State, I'm happy with the coach. Probably happier with Miles than App should be with what happened to them last year.

Couldn't agree more. While I can't speak for panther nation I for one am very happy with miles and I do have faith that he is a guy that can get us on the right track. The farewell coach curry tour was the worst. A lot of guys point out we went winless last year, but that year featured a lt of games that we simply were not even close in most long over by halftime. With the exception of the money games that was not the case this past year. I think miles will continue on this path. We still have issues with our depth chart but we should be able to sneak a couple games out and that will be a success in my opinion.

0-12 in 2008 at Indiana State
1-11 in 2009
6-5 in 2010
6-5 in 2011
7-4 in 2012 at Indiana State

Just do not see the Trent Miles hire as being that wonderful for Georgia State
until you look back and see their previous coach only had won one game the
previous three years.
Guess some improvement is better than none, and considering previous records
is really significant..
He did seem to have an improved team by the end of last year also.

Not a lot of people with experience going from nothing to something.

There are two ways to look at coaches. Is Coach A better all things being equal than Coach B?

Those make for fun lists for people to argue about and discuss in off-season.

The other way is, "Is Coach A the right coach School X today?"

Back after the 2010 season AState UL and UNT all made hires and I said repeatedly that each school had made great hires because each got the guy their program needed for the time and I think hindsight has proven that correct.

I'm very high on Joey Jones at USA, he's had two DC's hired away to good gigs, they've gone from nothing to something. Will he go into some national or regional hall of honor? I don't know but he sure looks like the right guy for the situation.

The former FCS power wanted a smooth transition from legendary coach Jerry Moore. It got a continuation of the decline of Moore’s last two seasons: from six straight double-digit win seasons, to back-to-back 8-win seasons to Satterfield’s first season. A popular former player, Satterfield knows the area (recruiting) and the expectations (winning). The move to FBS won’t make either any easier.

Not trying to make you call anyone out, but who would you put below him?

I could see the Georgia State guy being lower, but purely because of the rough year they had. It's not a knock on him, as I'm sure he's a good coach, but last year was a tough one to swallow.

Fran? I am REALLY trying to give him the benefit of the doubt in that our former coach left the cupboards REALLY bare... But he's made some truly head scratching calls that kill my soul.

I'm assuming you are referring to Fran's time at Texas State only, correct? Because you know he has put WAY more players in the NFL than Troy has (he had coaching stints at TCU with LT there, for example), and I'd guess (haven't looked it up so this may not be true) he's been to more bowls than Blakeney.

Looking at Fran's career.

Pitt St. 53-6 before him 18-10 the prior three years
First TXST stint, 13-9, prior two years 913
New Mexico 33-36 in 6 years, prior coach 9-50 in five years. Prior coach best year won three, Fran's first year won three, his worst year there.
TCU 25-10 in three seasons, they went 11-24 the three prior years.
Alabama 17-8 in two years, two prior years 13-11
TAMU 32-28 in five years, 40-22 the five prior years.

Other than TAMU he has left everyone better than he found them.

Other than Miles at Georgia State do not know of one that I would. Might have ranked him last myself. Want to gripe about it though.

Satt is a quality guy, he'll work as hard as anyone the next three years. I'll give him a couple of years before I get too concerned.

Of course all of this means absolutely nothing, but it's funny to hear fans try to discuss it.

To put this more in perspective...

Indiana State hadn't had a winning season since 1996. Miles was just the 2nd ISU coach to win his league COTY award. Ever. They had won 1 game in the previous three seasons and hadn't won a road game since 2004. ISU told Miles either turn the program around or we are shutting it down. He was recognized by Lindys and Athalon as one of the best hires in the country last year.

IMO, miles is at a minimum in the top half of the conference. I know that won't be the perception until he wins some games. But that's just my opinion.

A little off topic, but he actually was inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame recently.
But I believe it was because of his playing days under the Bear and not because of his coaching.

Mobile loves them some Joey Jones.

Scott has one year of HC experience and that was a losing record against FCS competition. Where else would you rank him? Folks will be somewhat patient once they understand the difference in the level of competition we now face. I don't expect miracles but I do think most want to see some progress over the next several years. I'm positive that Scott can make that happen.

This is the CUSA coaches rankings. With so many former Sun Belt members figured some would be interested in their rankings.
