So correct me if I'm wrong...looks like the qb/wr passing attack is going to be great but there is a big question at running back. If this is accurate, what say you? If you can't run the ball, i don't care how great your passing game is, you are going to struggle.

discuss

cincy is new to a true spread, even with mediocre rushing a good spread can light up crazy amount of points,
look at smu last year, they were horrible on defense but were putting up crazy amounts of points despite being borderline horrific in rushing.

houston had an at best average rushing during the keenum years but were ranked the #1 offense in the nation 3 of his years as the starter

wazzu is projected decent next year in the PAC they run maybe once every 10-15 plays

a lot of passing spread actually dont even expect success from the run the run and just do it (despite knowing it wont work) just to keep the defense honest

Its not really a big question as in "will there be a running game?", by more so "who will it be?". Instead a having a 1000 yrs back, ECU may well have three 300-400 yrd backs. Whoever catches the ball best out of the backfield will likely be the starter. Cooper had a ridiculous ypc average for a rb the past two years.

The rb question is at worst a mild concern.

RE: College Football Countdown Thread:
I think the any running game questions start with the O-line. If the offensive line play is decent, then the backs should all be good.

Rising senior Breon Allen averaged 5 yards per carry with last year's o-line (62 carries, 311 yards, 3 TD). He also caught 9 passes for 130 yards, which is important because our RB are expected to be receivers as well. Prior to that, he was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) First-Team All-American when he led all NJCAA rushers in yards (1,632) and ground touchdowns (20).

Rising junior Chris Hairston averaged just 3.8 ypc over the season, but he carried the load in the Middle Tennessee game after they knocked Cooper out of the game. He gained 94 yards on 18 carries in that game, which might not sound like much since it was MTSU, but they had the most physical defense in C-USA last year. He also had 4 catches for 35 yards in that game.

The real wild card is Marquez Grayson, a redshirt freshman who some say is the best running back on the team. According to our school website, he had offers from Clemson, Duke, Minnesota, NC State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech. As Paul says in his write-up, he could be getting the bulk of the carries by the end of the season.

We have players to carry the ball... we just don't know how good the O-line will be at opening holes.

You say mtsu had the most physical defense in CUSA? Didn't they give up 34+ points in 5 games and we're ranked 96th in rush defense? I'm not saying Chris Hairston isn't going to be good but if that's your reasoning why he will be good....find another.

I chose the word 'physical' because they were not great defensively. But they had a couple of linebackers that were bruisers and (trying not to go down the 'cheap shots' road here) they knocked a couple players - including starting RB Coop - out of the game. Hairston didn't back down and had nice numbers against them. You are correct, that doesn't mean he'll be good. But it doesn't mean he'll be bad either. Need to see more from him.

With UCF's appearance in the USA Today, I believe that's everyone accounted for in the AAC.

Man, if UCF's defense is as good and deep as Myerberg thinks they are, it will be tough for anyone else to win the conference.

Last year the secondary was young and inexperienced, so the defense was very pass defense conservative. No blitzes and very few stunts on the line.

Against Baylor, they loosened up a bit. They ran a bunch of stunts on the d-line, relying on the LBs to cover the run. Still didn't blitz much. That was one of the best offenses in college football last year and they forced a bunch of 3 and outs. This year, they should really open it up. I'm excited to see what they can do on defense.

Anyone wanna summarize the conferences? I'll post the results on the front page for whomever has the best format.

Looking for average team rankings, highest, lowest, top50, bottom 25 etc... any kind of information that looks useful.

Apparently everyone has forgotten or excluded Navy from their prognostications of the American's finish. Perhaps they all believe that Navy will win the conference. Not hating but, if Navy does win the Conference championship we have no right to even consider ourselves for P5 status. 07-coffee3

As far as this thread is concerned, Navy has 0% chance of winning the conference. In fact I'm going to go out on a limb and say only UCF, UC, or Memphis can.

A year ago no one considered Memphis anything but the bottom of the conference. Just some food for thought.

It was a joke, Ramenu didn't realize this was a bumped thread from last off-season (shocked at no Navy)
