Greatest Conference Rivalries?
Who would take a shot at listing and ranking the Belt's in conference rivalries?

I get the potential for the in state stuff:
I see a lot of USA/Troy banter.
It seems that UL hates ULM and vise versa.
GAST is to say the least not beloved by Southern - but isn't a rivalry yet.

Is the Ark State/UL rivalry a hot one? Since they seem to be the top of the Conference. Since my perception is that Troy is traditionally close or even with those two, what about Troy/Ark State or Troy/UL?

I realize that our rivalry with App State is new to the conference - but if I were doing the ranking, I would immediately put it near the top of such a list. But I of course don't expect any of you to consider it that yet.

As a stAte fan, I love to beat the Cajuns. They think they are better than they really are.

I don't think noobie-ness precludes a rivalry from being at the top of the list.

What are the criteria?

RE: Greatest Conference Rivalries?
I think the GS App rivalry is (was) the FCS equivalent of Ohio St Michigan. Each of us fighting for the top of the conference year in and year out, so many times where the lower ranked one has taken the higher ranked one down. Nine combined National Championships. Us breaking your long-ass home winning streak and being your only loss the Michigan win year, you guys stealing Armanti from us when we changed coaches, and owning us for the last few years. All the debates about blown calls. Plus the social/geographic juxtaposition of mountain rednecks vs. flatland rednecks, snow and cold vs. heat and gnats. There's A LOT that goes into it when you think about it. I have to admit that us moving up together has me feeling slightly brotherly towards yall these days, but I will fight through that and re-connect with my inner hatred soon enough.

Bottom line, even though we are FBS noobs, I have a hard time believing that ANY SB rivalry has the same amount of multi-layered, longstanding strength than the Black and Blue Bowl does.

The stAte/Cajun rivalry has really heated up the last three years. Before that point, Id say Troy was our football rival.

In terms of all sports...nothing beats stAte/UALR. As witnessed in the SBC Tournament.

The mutual respect coupled with white-hot hatred is what does it for me. I literally live on tobacco road. Duke/UNC is the sporting event of the year around here. When it comes to that rivalry you have blind hate and no respect.

App/Southern is something unique.

RE: Greatest Conference Rivalries?
The Black and Blue Bowl is brutal. I think each team tries to take out the other schools team physician first so subsequent damage
is compounded. Just the fact that our rival is Georgia Southern and they are too cool for school. They remind me of:
They had that snappy Triple Option. Their kind of TO was so exciting you could get a good nap while their offense stumbled down
the field with the ball. They rushed for a lot of yards though, and won a lot of games. Heck they didn't even complete a pass against
their last victim, someone calling itself Florida. Bet with their new passing attack they step it up and have ten or fifteen yards passing a game. So guess no more naps.

App/Southern is something unique.

The Black and Blue Bowl is always the biggest game of the year for both of us. There is just something different in the atmosphere, an overwhelming sense of anticipation and a mix of excitement and concern.

"The mutual respect coupled with white-hot hatred" may be the best descriptor of the dynamic between our two teams.

I admit, I think a lot of us were cheering for App when they beat Michigan, but we were admittedly jealous and fired up for that game...which made our victory over you guys the same year so awesome.

On the other side of the coin, looking back on the 2013 season, beating UF was definitely not as sweet knowing we got walloped by App. However, I'm sure there were a good many App fans cheering us on and proud of that victory.

Over the years, we have developed a deep respect and an equally as deep hatred for each other. We want each other to do well and make a big splash...but we both want our splash to be slightly better...and win our match up each year!

Speaking for others in the conference, I still don't know why ULM and Louisiana aren't a bigger rivalry...looking from the outside in, at least.

I definitely see stAte and Louisiana as being the top rivalry in the conference, mainly due to their both being top dogs, right now, in football. Lots of support and a lot of the line.

That's odd. I (we) never thought of you guys as rivals. Never heard much chatter from you guys about it either. I do vaguely recall a movement around 2006 when you guys beat us in a sensational come from behind victory to give us our only SBC loss in 2006. But I'm not sure it had any wings.

I can see where you'd view us as rivals during our stretch though. The come from behind in victory 2006, the shutout in 2007, the defacto title game of 2008 where we won 35-9, but most importantly the two really close games in 2009 and 2010 where you had victory taken from you at the very last moments. Both games (and the game in 2008) I believe would have given you a SBC title or at least a serious leg up on the way to one. I can see where that could cause some distaste for Troy. Three years in a row with a chance to win it all and Troy took it all three times. You guys got your revenge in 2011-2013 though. Could have been six in a row.

The USA/Troy rivalry is starting to heat up. Thankfully. MTSU was never a great rivalry seeings how we won six in a row then they won and ended the series/rivalry. UAB was never heated like the USA rivalry is becoming, even with the 99 yard field disaster. We've had UAB's number for a while now, but that could all change, as i happens with college football.

UALR/ASU is easily the best rivalry in the conference.

There was never any animosity between the two. Its just that you guys had our number for years, and for the fans it grew. It helped that you guys were the conference overlords back then. (giggle)\

The other key thing to remember is that outside of Memphis, ASU has never had a football rival, and the Memphis series was never consistent.

Yeah see I wouldn't call that a rival. That's more like "them guys over yonder we don't like very much"

There were several other schools in the SBC who called us their rival when it was not requited.

The Georgia Southern/Appalachian State rivalry has it's own wiki page...if that doesn't say greatest rivalry I don't know what does! 81 years and still going strong!
