NCAA to have New 5 Conference Subdivision in August
Read it and weep or get mad as heck.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/...ubdivision

The NCAA expects to create the five-conference subdivision in August. Slive estimated that it will take until at least the first of the year to draw up the rules by which the schools will govern themselves. In the current model, presidents make decisions as members of the NCAA Board of Directors. The five conferences want more responsibility in the hands of their athletic administrators.

I would think if any non P5 school wanted to provide those same benefits they would be allowed in as well. Thats how it works now with 85 scholarships.

I doubt teams in the AAC, MWC, and otehrs will give up that easy. Sure it may hurt teams like ULM but UH and Boise won't roll over.

Does this seprate football only? What about basketball or Title IX? Pay those kids and all athletes will want equal treatment.

He says he is not in favor of student athletes being employees, but what would anyone think for all this.

Slive laid out seven goals for the new subdivision of Division I that will house the following conferences: SEC, Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-12.

• providing the full cost of attendance to grant-in-aid recipients

• fulfilling the health, safety and nutrition needs of student-athletes

• allowing student-athletes who have exhausted their eligibility to complete their undergraduate degree without cost

• ending the cold war against agents and advisers so that players testing the professional waters can receive better information

• harnessing the demands of sports so that student-athletes get more balance in their lives -- i.e., another crack at the "20-hour rule"

• more and better assistance for academically at-risk student-athletes

• giving student-athletes a role and a vote in NCAA governance that affects them

I'm kind of stupid, is this the split that everyone has been talking about?

Seems to be since these changes, Slive said, "require a 21st century governance model within the NCAA and its structure that will preserve the collegiate model and allows our schools to make decisions that put student-athletes first. This is the No. 1 priority of the five conferences and we are committed to seeing it through."

Slive and the other commissioners hope delivering more benefits to student-athletes will forestall the judicial and executive branches of the federal government from doing the same. The future of intercollegiate athletics will hinge on whether they are right.

Doesn't sound like any other conferences will be admitted or get a choice if they wanted to be included.

You guys didn't actually read this right.

Here is sort of what the argument is. The 5 P5 conferences form a new Subdivision in August. Nothing changes competition wise, but they work to create the rules for that new Sub-Division. In January, the rules are announced, and G5 conferences are given the option of moving up to join this new Sub-division, or dropping to FCS. At which point all of the others will move up and join. The way things work is, they cant create an exclusive division, but they can create a new one and set up the rules for it, at which point other leagues will move up or move down. They cant force anyone down without a lawsuit.

That's the way I've been told it will work at least.

So this is not creating FBS-A and FBS-AA?

I think some of these proposed rule changes are necessary however I also think that some should be optional. For example paying college athletes for the full cost of attendance would be a non-optional rule but requiring 95 scholarships should be optional for FBS.

Not really. Its just the same division, with new rules.

What paragraph does it say that other conferences may be invited? Once they form their own
division what incentive do they have to want other conferences from the G-5 to join?
