The Best Option for SBC football is to go ahead and invite:

1. Missouri State - start playing in 2016
2. Texas Arlington (restart fully) - start playing in 2018
3. Florida Gulf Coast - start playing in 2018 (they have support)
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2013/mar/...-football/

Place these schools in a hold pattern for possible expansion to 16 after 2020

4. Coastal Carolina (nice rivalry for Ga Southern)
5. Eastern Kentucky (nice fit in the footprint, nice rivalry with App State)

Then

6. Kennesaw State (nice replacement if USA or Ga State go to CUSA)
7. North Florida ( will be the last universty in florida without football after FGCU, will be ready to join FGCU)
8. Lamar (long shot but will be nice Texas Triange with Texas State, Texas Arlington....aka the Texas Three or the Three Amigos )

Odd list of schools... what a joke!

It seems like "everyone who's ever been mentioned by anyone for all-sports Sunbelt expansion (and some who haven't), except Liberty and JMU".

No JMU, I say EKU is next best option. Footprint not substantially different that WKU and EKU was the first team/school to ever appear in the FCS, then 1-AA finals 3 consecutive years, plus App State does have a good bit of history with them.

Are you trying to get enough teams to have the Sun Belt split like the WAC/MWC did?

Yeah, I think a split is coming. The conference is to spread out, Idaho to North Carolina and possibly Virginia. If you get to 14 or 16 teams then there is less trauma during the split. If that happens, then 5 thru 8 become automatic pick ups. A lot could change in 8 years. Look at the past 8 years.

Don't add a new member unless we can steal another FBS member already. It's a long shot, but keep building with what we have. We may not need 12 for a CCG. No more FCS move ups.

I've been a staunch advocate of adding only the absolute best FCS teams, if we have to take an FCS team. We did that twice with Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. There have never been two programs better than these two in the history of FCS, in my (though limited) opinion. I'd rather not add anymore if we can avoid it. I've also been an advocate of not adding teams that don't fit into the Sun Belt, like North Dakota State, UMASS, Idaho, etc...

Unfortunately, no FBS teams are going to come to the SBC and we've now relegated ourselves to being The Gateway League once again. And not for great teams. Missouri State and Liberty aren't exactly prime candidates.

This time a couple years ago we were all fighting like hell at the idea of any FCS team moving up to the SBC. Now it's been normalized and we list mediocre FCS moveups (and startups!) as great ideas. There is a divide I think. Most that are listing these types of programs are either wannabe moveups, or new members of the SBC. You guys see things on a different level and see it as one big move up party. The older posters of Troy, Arkansas State, Louisiana and ULM are in stark contrast to that way of thinking.

Like the late great Jim Rohn once said "You wouldn't let someone push you off course, but you might let someone nudge you off course and not even realize it."

No, I think in general most have a similar stance in that they want no part of another FCS move up. But the reality is that if we want a 12th team, we will be taking an FCS team.

Now taking Georgia Southern & App State to me are non-starters, as I think they will have a quick jump to FBS. They won't be running the tables like they did in FCS, but they will do well and I see them in bowl eligibility consistently for years to come. Us? I see us as a project using the dreaded word "Potential". (and yes, I still count Texas State as a move up, given we have been fully FBS for a whopping ONE year).

True, unless they are thinking UMass, probably not.
FBS teams have to declare before July 1st instead of June 1st.
Personally have doubts they will do anything this year.

At this point, the possibilities are either Liberty or EKU and perhaps UMASS could be announced to join in 2 years. JSU, Lamar...sorry! JMU...have a good life in FCS.

Probably assuming that Troy, USA, and Georgia State aren't likely to be campaigning hard for JSU.

This list is hysterical.

I thought we made a rule that if FGCU was ever mentioned that pictures of the prior coaches wife were to be posted.

If JSU wants to join looks as if their president would make that clear to everyone, including the Sun Belt.
Have not heard a word from them.

RE: The Best Option for SBC football
Outside of Liberty and Massachusetts (FB) there are no other near-future realistic options for the Sun Belt in the east. The east is just about plucked dry for the time being, perhaps Missouri State in a few years. Unless we get a better television contract, no other FBS school would look to move to our conference. We are the bottom feeders (for now). Assuming it's desired, we'll need to look out west to expand. Here's looking at you Montana, Montana State, Eastern Washington and possibly North Dakota State. If the playoff money allotment is indeed capped at twelve, then there is no reason to get crazy with expansion. Outside of conference visibility there isn't much need to expand past the current eleven unless we have a solid add. If we don't go out west more, we need to drop Idaho to get the footprint back in scope.
