COMMISSIONER OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TOO BUSY
The perception of this crappy conference is not going to improve because of the commissioner. He is so busy being rapped up in the NCAA that he neglects the aggressive needs for the conference moving forward. From the CUSA website here are currently the areas where he serves in the NCAA: "Chair, NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions; Executive Vice President, Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA); Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance, Board and Executive Committee."

I remember watching an interview of him recently and he was almost acting like, "Yeah we finally got the conference realignment deal over and new teams in....so yeah let me tell you about the issues facing the NCAA." He has too much of that lawyer mentality. I mean he is the chair for one, Executive Vice President for another, and on the Board for another....and then tries to manage an office for CUSA with 22-23 employees. I am so angry at how he does this conference he needs to sell out and move to the NCAA because that is where he wants to be. I wanted to email him but when I looked for his email on the conference website it is unavailable.

I remember when he was at La Tech he said, "Well we want to generate excitement for the conference I mean that is the idea anyway." Hey BB, how about you give us some aggressive plans for making this conference better so I can get excited? Honestly, I don't care what the NCAA does.

RE: COMMISSIONER OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TOO BUSY
The problem is getting rid of him. The university Presidents are responsible for that, and most of them are not going to be willing to oust him since he just brought them into the conference. ODU, UNCC, FIU, FAU, UTSA, North TX, WKU, and La Tech are all newbies, and I doubt if any of their presidents would be willing to vote to get rid of him. BB needs to go!

Thus the reason they were brought in en masse; and getting rid of 2 teams he did not bring in (Tulane and ECU) was just lagniappe.
Thus the reason he wanted nothing to do with the MWC merger.

He's probably got 9 out of 14 (~64%) strongly on his side.

If the 5 veterans (Marshall, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP) all made a unified statement that the conference needs new leadership, that might make a difference. But so far, they haven't done that.

The MWC merger failure is the one area where I really fault him. That would have been the occasion for Banowsky to exercise some of those connections.

If they did it, they'd do it covertly, so we wouldn't know. And I doubt they would - Marshall and UAB have no complaints. USM may not either.
Banowsky brought in Marshall, Rice and UTEP. UAB and USM supported ending the merger talks (although USM's leadership at the time was at low ebb and in transition and BB took advantage of that).
And Banowsky's also done a good job with TV and Bowl games, at least historically.
He's not going anywhere.

At the end, the only schools FOR the merger were Tulane, Rice and UTEP and maybe another in the west. The rest got turned by the fear-mongering (travel costs will go up!!; the tv deal won't be that great). And to be fair, there was some risk attached and the benefits for the far-eastern teams weren't as big as it would have been for central and western teams.

Who at USM was against the merger? That was basically our only chance at getting into a decent conference!

The CUSA breakup meant some remaining teams might head for the Sunbelt thus putting cusa out of business or else he needed to shore up the shop with whatever teams he could add from anywhere he could get them and that is what he did in order to preserve his job. That is why it is now known as the C-Belt and headed downhill faster than a roller coaster.

The commish could not control a lot of what happened. I think cusa has done great adding teams each time.

BB is inactive instead of proactive in dealing w/ the conference which is why we've been raped twice & turked in the rear w/ our TV deal & will continue to be until we're a DIII conference as long as he's in charge.

USM and UAB are the only schools in this dumpster fire that predate BB's reign of failure. He has no interest in us since he didn't hand pick us. The clown would replace us with Ga State or Tx St if he could.

C'mon man, to put that 100% on him is ridiculous. Neither conference wanted to lose that NCAA auto bid and the NCAA wasn't handing out 2 to a "mega conference."

That shouldn't have been important. The MW typically puts 2-4 teams in the tournament every year. The merged conference would have been a 2-4 bid conference anyway. Having those top MW schools playing games against the better CUSA squads may have helped some of the bubble CUSA schools land bids as well. The merger didn't go through because CUSA had a change of heart and decided to go with a more regional approach. The impression I have been given is that it was CUSA that decided to go a different direction. The Tulane folks claim it was Bano and some of the eastern schools that were the driving force behind that push. Cowen, who was working with the MW was supposedly taken by surprise by the whole thing.

RE: COMMISSIONER OF THIS CONFERENCE IS TOO BUSY
Bottom line is a strong leader would have back-doored the Big East on their acquisitions and positioned themselves as stronger than they started, like the MWC did. 3-4 schools would have been forced to join us after the inevitable Catholic break-off instead of creating two abominations, we would have had one damn strong conference in the East and one in the West with much stronger bargaining power against the P5. Now everything is diluted in both money sports with the un-needed third conference. Merger or not, had the CUSA defectors done what Boise et al did, we would be holding all the cards.

The MWC reached its peak strength in the years when Utah, BYU, and TCU were all members of it. Compared to then, the MWC today is a weaker league by far now that all 3 of those programs have left the conference.

Not sure what you had in mind. Boise went back because once the MW renegotiated thier tv deal, they could offer Boise a deal that actually netted more money as a full member of the MW than they would receive as a football-only member of the Big East.

Strength is relative. Those teams are gone and not sideways, except maybe BYU. They aren't in another conference of the same tier competing with the MWC teams for recruits and resources. The MWC is as strong as a non P5 conference as the MWC was as a non-BCS conference. Top 1 or 2.

And you wouldn't call that good leadership to negotiate that deal and make sure Boise knew about it? It stopped the bleeding of the MWC, severely weakened the AAC/Big East's plan of bringing in the western markets and top teams. If BB could have done something similar to get you guys to think twice or halt your move, the BE would have folded and their would be one less conference in the mix to compete with for everyone. CUSA dropped the ball at precisely the wrong time. It may have been inevitable, but they didn't have to make it look that easy.

Would have been a lot easier on everyone to bring in 3 teams to CUSA, two of which had already been here, than for us to lose seven, and it would have reduced the competition for TV money by folding the BE. MWC and CUSA would have received the lion's share of what was available after the fact.

I like the teams we brought in. But if BB had pulled off a coupe like that, no one would be questioning his ability to lead at this point in time.

that's total BS. no team was going to leave the big east for CUSA.
