[split] OT: In your perfect 16 team, 4 pod AAC, what four teams would you add?
READ ASSUMPTIONS BEFORE VOTING

UPDATED
  • The governance surrounding championship games has been lifted, and the AAC partakes in a 4 team semifinal (best of the 4 pods), then a CCG between the winners.
  • Assume no inherent problems in adding members: i.e. a Georgetown selection implies adequate facilities to house FBS level competition (same could go for UMass)
  • Teams from the G4, FCS, and BYU are available for selection. No one from below FCS or in the P5
  • Keep in mind geography symmetry for pods (i.e. if you pick 4 Northern teams, chances are you're going to have to split them up inconveniently somehow)
  • Bonus points if you relay your 4-4 team pods, and why

I pick BYU, Air Force (to form the backbone of a western division) then SDSU and UNLV.

BYU + AFA + SDSU + UNLV to make a western Division
SMU + UH + Tulane + Tulsa to make a southern Division
UCF + ECU + USF + Memphis to make an Eastern Division
UConn + Temple + Navy + Cincinnati to make a northern division.

This expansion thread is ridiculous. 4 teams? I read your assumptions and still say its ridiculous. Expansion has settled and we wont be adding more teams (or losing any teams).

That said, I voted BYU and Air Force. The rest of the list absolutely sucks.

BYU, Air Force, Army, Wichita St.

The American would have all the Military schools. It is like owning the 4 railroads in Monopoly. Nothing major but good to have. :)

BYU is a fortuitous add.

Wichita St. bring another good basketball program.

RE: OT: In your perfect 16 team, 4 pod AAC, what four teams would you add?
BYU, Air Force, and Other (Colorado State and Boise State). Allows for market penetration in the Mountain Zone, gives another Service Academy, a name brand, a consistently good program over the past decade, and allows for there to be a true West pod, without forcing other teams to have to make that trip.

It would then cause for the following pods:

East: Temple, UConn, Navy, ECU
Southeast: UCF, USF, Tulane, Houston
Central: Cincinnati, Memphis, Tulsa, SMU
West: BYU, Boise State, Colorado St., Air Force

This would balance all pods competitively, keep all established rivalries intact, and allow for one permanent cross-over for any that weren't accounted for (Tulsa/Houston, SMU/Navy and Air Force/Navy). This would cause Navy to only rotate through each team every 8 years, as opposed to every 6 years for every other team with a single protected rivalry, and 4 years for teams without any protected rivalries. Logistically and financially, I feel this would be the best move, however, it would never happen so I hate that I've already wasted this much time on it.

RE: OT: In your perfect 16 team, 4 pod AAC, what four teams would you add?
Northeast: UConn - Temple - Navy - Cincinnati

I don't think Navy particularly wants or needs Army to be in their conference, as long as they get to keep playing one another. Army's probably happy as an independent anyway, what with how the whole C-USA experiment worked out and all. I don't see a particular reason to add

Central: Houston - SMU - Tulane - Tulsa

Obvious decision is obvious. The schools were together in C-USA's Western division for 7 years, and there's some pretty significant history in most of these matchups even beyond that. Plus the geography matches up well.

Southeast: UCF - USF - ECU - Memphis

I really didn't want to spread this division out this badly, but there's really nobody else to add in the Southeast to even it out. I could see an argument for swapping Memphis for ECU or Tulane, but either way it's not going to help that much.

West: BYU - Fresno State - UNLV - San Diego State

Let's call a spade a spade here - this is the BYU pod. That's the only reason to put this together. Not that the other schools don't have some merit for consideration, but adding them certainly doesn't merit an entire division just for them. The obvious question is, "Why not Boise?" and the answer is "because I foresee their attendance taking a nosedive." My opinion may change in a year, but I don't see Boise's fanbase sticking around through another 5-7 season if it comes to that. Plus, SDSU and UNLV are both pretty solid basketball adds, which is more than can be said for Boise.

Dear AAC,

Thank you for only considering the two worst schools in the MAC and not two of the best.

Love,
The MAC

Army, BYU, and AF are the obvious adds. Umass was my fourth. The NE needs another school, Be a good fit with UNCONN and Temple rivalry-wise for both sports.

I voted for Army, Air Force, BYU and UTSA.

Army, UConn, Temple and Cinci in Pod A
ECU, UCF, USF and Navy in Pod B
Houston, SMU, Memphis and Tulane in Pod B
Tulsa, BYU, Air Force and UTSA in Pod D

ECU could be guaranteed to play UConn every year, UTSA could play Houston every year, Memphis could play Cinci every year and of course, Army, Navy and Air Force would play each other every year.

I picked UTSA over Charlotte and ODU because of market size, support levels and recent success.

UTSA is not a bad choice. FB buzz is there. Don't know anything about BB.

Do think UTSA will build up their football program. But, UTSA basketball program was next to last in the RPI. Have a high school gym passing as a college arena. Seating on the sidelines, and no seating on either baseline behind the basket. . . Like I said high school gym. So that would have to be addressed.
