OT: South Alabama researchers develop a cancer-fighting protein to be tested in space
South Alabama researchers developed a cancer-fighting protein that will be tested in space. The rocket took off today and the protein will be in space for about three months. This protein is targeting breast cancer.

PP5 acts to catalyze the removal of phosphate from proteins that control cell growth and survival. The removal of phosphate turns on processes that allow cancer cell growth and proliferation. “If we inhibit this key step,” he [Dr. Richard E. Honkanen] said, “we hope to prevent cancer cell growth and survival.”

Some of you might remember that USA found a possible cure to pancreatic cancer a couple years ago; that research is ongoing.

"Honokiol reduced pancreatic cancer cell growth and produced pancreatic cell death. The affect was apparent within 24 hours of dosing with a 70 to 80 percent pancreatic cancer death rate within 72 hours."

and I sure would like to take a rocket ride.

Good stuff, hope the schools research pays off.
