I don't keep up with the boards much as I used to, so I don't know if this is been posted yet. If it has been posted, my bad, if not, enjoy.

Below is a long video, about 15 minutes, that goes with this kid's story. I did not realize he's an orphan/foster kid. Speaking from personal experience, and from scholarship, that's a really tough life. The rate of kids in foster care with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is higher than that of war vets.
His most challenging time will come during his transition from Chicago to Western Michigan. It will be that time when he would be most likely to leave Western. That is a time when most of these kids fail. My transition from foster care to college was very traumatic, and among the worst times of my life. I still reflect upon the mistakes that were made and it still regret not finishing my college basketball career. I hope PJ has the savvy to deal with this kid. If not, there is a special program at Western for foster care alumni.

RE: Jamal Brown
Delmas was a true tough story as well. Not in foster, but grew up without family as Biggers took him in. He was a true success story who hopefully reaches out to Jamal. WMU can become family to kids like this and I hope his story turns out like Delmas did.
Thanks for sharing.

He is obviously a tough kid, as was Delmas, so I'm sure he'll be fine. Nonetheless, not having a family whatsoever is really tough row to hoe. There are times you're very lonely, and very sad, given that most of your college classmates have families. Even coming from a poverty-stricken single-parent family is better than being in foster care or in an orphanage.
Both Michigan State and Western Michigan have special programs for these kids. One of the small things that both universities do is to periodically give these kids "care packages" that consists of small things like a typical college student might get from his or her parents. There are other support services as well that are more substantial.
These kinds of programs are relatively rare, so both Western Michigan and Michigan State deserve kudos for their efforts in this area. I really wish the best for both Jamaal and PJ as they go forward together.

People may criticize P.J. for a variety of things, but he one undeniable thing that Coach Fleck does is care about his players. Jamal will be in good hands.
I admired Cubit for the same commitment to his players. I always wish him well at Illinois and am glad his son has joined him. Both class acts.

We set the standard for other schools to follow.... Nothing like a $800,000 grant from the state to spread the word to 7 other state colleges.
It makes me proud as hell to be a Bronco when I see a front page article in the Sunday Gazette highlighting Amanda's progress toward becoming a Presidential Scholar.......... This is a wonderful program..

I'm easy but I'm not cheap!
Ok, we'll rely on others to post the news about you. Great stuff though. Very proud to say I "converse" with you, even if on a web board and the occasional PM.

Hello you crazy seamen...just wanted to say that [for any of you that live in the vicinity of your university] I read on the Rocket board last year that the NCAA allows families to invite players in for home cooked meals, etc. for players that are away from home. That may be something you'd be interested in doing for a kid like that. Obviously you'd need to get hold of the Fleckster before doing but may be a great way to help improve a kid's life.

47 people in Chicago shot this weekend. That city has been in the news for horrible gang violence in recent weeks. Can't wait until this kid gets on campus and is away from everything he has to deal with in the south side.

Chicago's ballerina/mayor has helped institute some the toughest gun laws in America, it's just not possible that people are being shot in Chicago.

82 shot over the 4th of July weekend. So there's improvement, they got that going for them....
