I just can't fathom that some think we can hurt your basketball recruiting. Could we take a Memphis kid here or there? Sure. Could you then use Pastner's national recruiting to get a better kid from Texas or California? Sure.

Oxford and Ole Miss are great places to recruit football players. It's a great small southern town with a beautiful campus and the highest level of competition in college football. Those qualities don't exactly impress a stud basketball player who wants to play in the NBA. That kid likely wants a large city, the best basketball conference and an NBA arena. I'm sure the new OM arena will be nice, but it won't hold a candle to the Forum, nor will it ever be the home of an NBA franchise.

The truth is the football playoff is doing nothing but increasing the gap between the haves and the have nots. And I don't just think it is a financial gap. I can foresee the 5 conferences deciding to go to 9 (maybe 10) game schedules and only playing each other for the 2 OOC games. If I were a non power 5 conference school, I would play any and every power 5 team I could.

The bigger issue is if any non power conference school runs the table and goes undefeated, but doesn't play a power school, they will have virtually no chance of being picked by the committee for one of the 4 spots.

So the arrogance of your AD is fine, we should bend over and say 'thank you sir, may I have another?'

God I hate the the Black Bears.

I've already stated that his comment was a mistake. I'm just saying A) your basketball program shouldn't worry about Ole Miss and B) your AD is probably a lot smarter than you think he is.

Asking us to think rationally about cooperation with Ole Miss or UTK athletic depts may be asking too much.

As long as Mississippi wants to play football, home-home...I see no issue doing the same for hoops.

Same with UT

It is my understanding that basketball may not be included in this deal, and if that's the case then I withdraw much of my objection.

So the only good we get from the football game is if we win because there is no money. Well, the ticket sales; but that's it. Whenever a smaller program gets paid by a bigger program is when the smaller travels to the bigger for a game to be their whipping boy. Whenever there is an actual home and home series, and in our case, basketball games too, we don't get paid for the football game.

We get paid for a 50,000+ home crowd compared to an 18-25,000 home attendance against an Austin Peay (in addition, we likely pay AP to come play). That's a $625,000 payday increase minimum. We may not like the Black Bears playing in Memphis but it has financial value, just like playing UTK in Memphis does. And our players (and prospective players) want to play those type games too.

minimum is right. the reality is its a significantly higher payday. If we get 50,000 at $50 per ticket... which is about what we charge for the OM game... then that's a gate of 2.5 mil. Now, if we replaced them with an Austin Peay or an Arkansas State, we are looking at 25k at $20 per ticket which is more like a $500k gate. Sorry, but that payout increase is more than any bowl tie-in the AAC currently enjoys. The bottom line is if we want to stop playing the Ole Miss' and UT's of the world, then we have to increase our gate and ticket prices for our AAC schedule.
Please do not use rational facts in this debate.

I don't really care if we play them, but it certainly stands to reason that its a financial windfall for our struggling football program. I don't think we've played them in several years, yet I don't see where it has necessarily benefited our recruiting or attendance by not. Quite honestly, I think it helps us recruit in Mississippi by playing them.

There is no doubt, no question that recruits would prefer to play against power 5 schools than AP, ASt, UTM, etc. Again we might not like UTK or Ole Miss (I'm with you there) but we can use the money from the increased ticket sales & it without question helps recruiting. And isn't that the point, to recruit players who think they are good enough to play in the SEC or the B12 but they didn't get the opportunity & now want to prove their worth? Success against the SEC or B12 will support our case to gain admission to the power 5 & help us recruit power 5 type players - and provide financial benefit with substantial increased attendance. And with success, mid-south players will begin to consider us a valid alternative to other universities recruiting them. If not Ole Miss or UTK pick any of the other SEC, B12, ACC, B1G or PAC schools THAT WILL GENERATE THE SAME LEVEL OF ATTENDANCE.

memphis, the only fan base in the free world whines about something said by an OM AD

OM needs to focus on getting their big time football program to SECCG in Atlanta for the first time in the history of the universe.
