I overheard Brad Smith saying that he redshirted last year; he said he was a late walk-on and knew he had no chance of seeing the field. He's an interesting runner. Good balance and good speed, straight up the gut style. And he don't stop. 1st Team DIII All-State / All District /All Conference, Conference Outstanding Player.
Wow, this guy looks like he could be something special. Welcome Brad! I would love to see us with a Toby Gerhart type of runner. Imagine this guy at 200lb after a couple years in a college strength and conditioning program. He would be a like freight train. Thanks for sharing!
Both QBs dealt with pressure. Both did a nice job evading it, but I felt Ely did Better. Ely is a quality QB. My opinion is that he is the guy. Woodside has talent, and I agree he threw a nice pass to Cory Jones before the safety could get there to help for the TD. Ely found the open receiver and made the throws including a couple should have been TDs. He can throw across the field deep after rolling out the other way. Woodside forced it too much into coverage. I believe Ely will put this team in position too compete in all the games this year. Woodside seemed a little rattled by the pressure.
I was really impressed by TE Michael Roberts. This guy is a big target that moves well and has soft hands. He is a great receiver and a load to bring down. Opposing DBs are gonna have a tough time with him. He is a TE that could dominate a game. Real bright spot here.
I was thrilled to see the RS freshman performing well. Yousey and Richards look really capable and will compete for a lot of playing time. Corey Jones is quality and will have a big year. He has great hands, is very fast, and his yards after catch will be his greatest contribution. He will be in the end zone frequently. The WR that appeared to me to be on a mission was Zack Rogers. He is maturing into a very dependable wide out.
The guys that stood out otherwise we're RB Brad Smith. This guy is a solid back. He is a guy that can tear up and wear down a defense. He is a throw back tough runner that can get to the corner. He is a nice addition.
I am pretty sure #82 was DE Daniel Davis. Wow. This kid is gonna tear things up this year. He was pretty uncontainable today. Big athletic guy.
Toledo's defensive line is loaded. Marquis Moore is a block of a man. Toledo goes deep on the D-line. Gotta be the best D-Line collection of talent ever at Toledo.
LBs are deep and talented. Toledo's starters are very good but will be challenged by Jaylen Coleman for sure.
The O-Line really has some big shoes to fill with the loss of Kerin, but Again Toledo is deep on the O-Line. Person, Nkansah, Norton, and Henry are mammoth linemen on the two deep.
These are my impressions. I was pleased to attend yesterday. It was nice to have a 1:00 PM Spring game.

Nice video, but nobody even laid a hand on him until 6 minutes into the video. Nice speed, but what a great O-line and fullback. The kid looks to have some potential. Clyde usually produces some nice football talent.
The D will have to be good. I do not see us scoring as many points this year as in years past. It will well into game #5 before the O gets untracked. I base this on new QB's, slightly new schemes, Loss of Reedy/Page type game breaker, loss of Fluellen (Hunt softens blow), and the emphasis on D this year.
This will be a solid team but it will be defined by the D
Rogers, jones, and Wilcher have impressed me this spring and will have good shots at the third spot. Behind Alonzo and Olack of course. Yousey is in the mix as well as the sweet freshman guys we will obtain in fall ball.

There are a few plays where he is overwhelmed by defenders and stopped cold, though....except he isn't, and he consistently runs away from defenders throughout the play. No slowing down. Not sure how his speed will translate at the college level but for a guy I never heard of until yesterday he's pretty good.
Some nice running by Smith, but you have to wonder if there are enough touches to go around. Obviously Hunt, if healthy, gets most of the carries. True freshman Terry Swanson is impressive, and then you have the walk-on transfer from Tennessee.

OFFENSE: I hope you are wrong about Offense. My observation at QB is that we will be in the best shape since Beckman came here. I hear the players saying they are very excited about the QB play. Have not heard that before. I have seen better reads by the QB than anytime in the last four years and the ability to put the ball in tight zones. Also, the receivers now have "more" flexibility to change their route based on coverage. Not so much, in past. Last, but not least, the TE's are now actual receivers. When all the running backs are healthy and the O line is all together [Not split or held out of scrimmage] this line better be one of the best in the league both running and pass blocking. I want to score allot, but more important, I want to keep it on long sustained drives. What an easy way to improve the defense.
DEFENSE: I see a much more angry defense this year. They seem to send 5 or more almost all the time. The D line and backers should be solid. We now have some taller athletic guys playing in the back 4. They seem more aggressive also. I've seen more press on outside receiver than I ever saw before. Atleast this defense will keep the opposition guessing and I'm confident will hit you play after play.
Conclusion: Without a allot of key injuries, this team is the first one that I look at since new coaches arrived and think, Championship level. Now, that doesnt mean anything. Still have to go make plays.
Ely is the type of QB that does not go to the MAC. We are lucky that Saban figured he would never play Toledo so it was OK to push him in our direction. The fact that Woodside and Julian are close in competition with him is a compliment to our recruiting efforts. TO had the job to himself last year so he never played with super intensity. His pro future was in baseball. Our 3 QBs are hungry and will make the extra effort needed to win games.

Agree
Since Owens was the 1,215th pick in the 2012 draft, I doubt he has much of a future in baseball. He barely played in high school.

Do we know if TO is going to pursue professional baseball?
I'm 40 yrs old, haven't hit a curve ball since the ninth grade and I was chosen with the 1,216th pick, so my guess is no, but it makes for nice resume filler.
Just had a nice piece on the QB situation on Ch 11. Interviewed Phillip Ely who said he was upset with his two interceptions but felt he played well once he settled down. Guy is a dead ringer for Logan Woodside. If they hadn't called him Phillip on the introduction to the interview and had "Phillip Ely" running under the interview video I would have sworn it WAS Woodside. Ely has shaved and grown his hair out a lot since Saturday.
well when your local tv stations are all bought out by a huge media company who cuts the staff, eliminates the national, DC and most neighborhood reporters leaving you with a couple dolls reading blood, fear and fire leads on their way from market #73 to market #48 and a sports department that consists of 1 lifer and an 18 year old intern living on a diet of pop tarts and old coffee while he cuts video on a computer you are just grateful they didn't superimpose the name of the stabbing victim on the face of the suspected murderer. meanwhile, it sounds like the team looks pretty good. i think we are fine at QB. Ely is a player. Either he starts or the guy who beats him out has got a hell of a future.

Julian, may be our punter, this year, great leg, watched him in spring practice this year. Crowd was great, better then having it on Fri night. All things considered the defense on both sides was very good. I think this coming season will be very good, not like the way we finished last year.

With all the off-season surgeries, it's a good indicator of what happened last year.
