Really doesn't matter though, the kid's obviously strong.

So you are not impressed the kid won his weight division in the state power lifting meet. By the way those numbers are extremely impressive for an 18 year old. Especially that squat number.

no lie, kinda makes you wonder

Grenada High School senior Genard Avery won the 242-pound division at the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A Powerlifting Meet this past weekend. Avery, a Memphis signee, set three new state records along the way. It was the second straight state title for Avery

just sorta impressive. 03-lmfao

good grief

I guess you guys failed to read the last part of what I said, which was "really doesn't matter, the kid is obviously strong." And then the part before that where I said "obviously impressive."

Reading comprehension folks, it's pretty simple.

My only point was that in the 242 lb. weight class, there are some brutally strong individuals with insane totals. That is typically one of the more popular weight classes in powerlifting with serious numbers. Once again though, the guy is powerful especially for a kid in high school. I can only imagine how much higher his total will be as he gets in college.

Apparently in the 242 lb High School weight class in Mississippi there isn't anyone stronger than him. If you are talking about comparing him to a steroid injecting professional lifter then I can shoot that down as well. There is nothing wrong with our reading comprehension.

The problem your statement is that he is not a powerlifter, he is a football player that lift weights. He has to work on other things besides lifting weighs like conditioning and technique. The bigger you are, the slower you are and i'm sure he wants to continue playing linebacker in college. And 600lbs squat for an 18 year old is super impressive.

It's a common feat?

No, I think he is being sarcastic. I remember DeAngelo Williams powering through 2 defenders for a touchdown his senior year then the commentators bragging about his 500lbs squat afterwards.

Thanks, usually I recognize sarcasm but I know nothing about power weight-lifting so my frame of reference was inadequate.

All those numbers are crazy impressive to me.

I was huge into bodybuilding throughout my teens, but was a hard gainer. I did an all natural bodybuilding contest when I was 19 years old, and my PR on squat was 345. The day I finally got 315 on squat and 225 on bench were huge accomplishments to me. 600+ is crazy

That said, I don't see what some of the above posters problems are with open discussion that doesn't just simply say "Cool, thats awesome" to the OP's statement or angle. Its a message board, thats what its for. I thought some would find it interesting that one of the top female powerlifters was from Memphis and has nearly the exact power numbers as our player

Those are impressive numbers. He has to do so much other training too. When I was powerlifting (very short time) most of us couldn't run a 100 yards to save our lives.

Looking at his photo he seems to be fairly long armed which is a mark of a good football player, but not a good bench press number. Short armed and barrell chested contribute to big bench press numbers because the bar only has to move a minimal distance to lock out. Thus his bench is not a huge number but a good one. His squat and dead lift are big time.

More on Avery - Link

Runs a 4.73
More than fast enough.

Not to mention Shareef White, who came in 4th was the leading tackler in the MS/AL AllStar game.

We got a couple of good ones.
