Biggest duh move ever. Georgia State has a real chance here to build their own football stadium and a college campus like atmosphere like GT or Morehouse/Spelman has.

Do you think GSU can overcome the opposition of the local residents to get it done?

I think so. When it is presented as jobs in the community... An automatic influx of population(students) which would mean a faster timeline for retail, restaurants, etc. You may not turn them all on to it, but I think we get enough.

Yeah. I live close by in East Atlanta and go to church in Summerhill. There isn't going to be much opposition. There is an opportunity for GSU to affect the area the way we affected the Fairlie-Poplar area Downtown. Especially if the Gold and Orange lots that are closest to Summerhill and Peoplestown housing become the retail/residential side. Right now the area is a huge hole. If anyone thinks that it magically will become 100 acres of 3 br 3 ba homes they are smoking some good stuff. I think, Mayor plus City Council Prez plus President = Slam Dunk

Influx of population and retail is more important than the jobs. A lot of it is fear of the LAST two developments in the area which were both, hey lets just build a stadium here. This will be different. Will be more like FSU's College Town development.

RE: GSU eyes campus expansion with Turner Field
I would say having an off campus stadium is usually a negative but GSU does not have a "campus" so less of a big deal. Still a slight negative if the majority of students cant reasonably walk to the game. I would hope GSU would have shuttles from the dorms or typical tailgate areas and not depend on MARTA only as well. The city of ATL really messed things up in that area. It could have been a anchor for the whole area getting better. It did improve slightly over the years but nothing significant. Hopefully they can keep the corruption and under the table payments to a minimum and get it right this time since it will be for a university and there will likely be state and possible federal oversight. 50/50 at best.

I think you dont have a very good idea as to where GSU lies vs Downtown and vs the Ted.

I have walked to the Ted from campus for baseball games. The damn businessman special probably cost me a couple of tenths of my GPA. It is shorter than walking from the UGA Vet Med house to Sanford Stadium. I know this for a fact.

I think they fear it will only be the stadium, but from what I read geo state is planning on putting in dorms and with dorms comes a dining hall and possibly some stores, maybe geo state can also find space to put some sort of museum they don't already have to cover the artistic/cultural want the area has, build a discovery center or something and the middle-upper middle class neighbors will love the change, i don't think that summer hill lady realizes the difference between a college buying the land and a professional sports team buying it, if she is worried about it being cultural and economically helpful then she shouldn't be.

lol. I wish you could've put that last actual sentence first so I couldn't have wasted my time reading this comment.

You clearly haven't been downtown anytime in the last decade if you consider turner field, a stadium that is max 5 blocks away, off campus.

We have parked in the blue lot since the 80's and students used to regularly walk to their cars. I see those 32k students all over downtown daily. Downtown is our campus.

Google says that the distance from GaSt to Turner field is 1.6 Miles.

Note: The Distance from Hanner Field House to Paulson Stadium is 1.5 miles.

Now I have no idea about how friendly the walking path is at gast - sure not to be a pleasant as the walk at Southern - but it appears to be a perfect location for them. Especially since many students surely live somewhere in between (like at Southern) and if they would plan to build more housing out that direction.

I wish you well GAST - looks like it would be a good move if you can afford the property.

Since Atlanta is MLS bound a partnership with the new owners for say 22k seats expandable to 35k without any heavy lifting would be sweet and leave ample room for student housing and light commercial development (ie. bars and shops) and create a neat community.

According to Google Maps, the walk from the heart of campus is 1 mile. http://goo.gl/Yw2f9R You walk past the sports arena, make a right at the University Waffle House, under the MARTA Station, past the capital, and you are there.

University Commons, which I believe is the furthest dorm from the Ted, is a 1.8 mile walk.

You can't be a true SBC member unless directions to your campus involve passing a Waffle House.

We either have 2 or 3 on campus. They are headquartered in Norcross

Which if you went to either Bama game you likely walked the same distance from parking to the stadium.
