To me, based on a sample size of 2 games and several scrimmages, hawkin's outside game is better and he handles the ball better. I think he's very physical much like Sylvester but is actually may be a bit quicker and more explosive. It's weird, he looks to be maybe more dynamic than Sylvester with a more well rounded game but Gray just had more of an imposing presence and had faster foot speed, if that makes sense. Gray was unquestionably a better athlete and back then at 6-6 and 235, he was just dominant even against taller guys, which is the unknown with Hawkins. Gray was pretty cut up too, physically, more so than Hawkins.

Good insights, thanks.

Yeah, Giffey is slow as molasses. Dude had a defensive rating of 99.2 this season. He definitely wasn't playing because of his defense; he was playing because he was 4th in the nation in eFG%.

Well I'm thinking Kings rebounding ability and desire would trump his supposed deficiencies as well.

I dunno, I can't tell what Pastner is thinking from one second to the next, but I don't think Giffey is comparable to King. Giffey's defense was noticeably bad, but they rocked with him because he was pretty much the most efficient player in D1 basketball this season. King was good, but he wasn't even on the same planet as Giffey on the offensive end IMO.

Plus, UConn was an amazing defensive team outside of Giffey, while their offense wasn't nearly as efficient most of the year. I think Ollie knew he could play a guy like Giffey and sacrifice a little defense for a lot of offense because guys like Napier and Brimah were so goo on the defensive end.

We sucked on defense (and offense).

Hawkins isn't really "cut" but he is just strong as hell. As 450 says, he is explosive and handles the ball pretty well.

The kid is the absolute real deal, and more importantly to me is an exceedingly nice young man that loves the game and smiles a lot. Very respectful and coachable.

He works hard at defense, but frankly we got such a small sample size of him this year, I can't say he will be a lockdown guy.

He'll do anything he asked to do.

He's going to be a solid Tiger.

Oh.....
So, this thread is about basketball. Got it.

Joey's long arms and outstanding hops allowed him to control the paint against most college opposition. I am not sure if Hawkins has those attributes. I think he will play the five only in an emergency based on the scanty info provided to date.

Tiger basketball has no off-season. 03-wink

Well, he's a 4, not a 3 or 5. I'm just saying if he plays any position other than 4, it would be at the 5 just as easily as at the 3.

Hopefully we can hire someone that will do that.

Fine, I'll do it. Have the University contact my people.

Thanks

He isn't really big enough to play the 5 over any length of time....especially against all of these "well coached teams with good players" that we seem to play.

He can play 3/4...the kid can just flat out play. Whatever "it" is, he has it.
