RE: OT Americas best college towns.
What makes a college town different from a town with a college? what is the measuring stick?

Austin (to me) is a great town, but if UT wasn't there, no problem... Austin would still be a cool town.

San Marcos is a great town, but if Texas State wasn't there, that place would be a blip on the map.

To me, that's the difference between college town and not.

(oh, and I know it wasn't directed at me, but I've never spent time in Lafayette... Driven through (or by) it though).

There are only two or three true college towns in NC and Asheville isn't one of them. Boone, Chapel Hill, and possibly Greenville. UNCA is a pretty minor factor in Asheville, so while its an interesting town (though overrated IMO) I don't consider it a college town. Williamsburg is alright and more of a college town than Asheville but I still don't think of it that way; Charlottesville, Blacksburg, Harrisonburg, and to lesser extent Farmville are the college towns in VA. I'd say a college town is place where the university is the largest employer and people affiliated with the university (students, faculty, staff) account for a majority of the population - Asheville and Williamsburg don't meet that criteria. I wouldn't be suprised if Greensboro with 5 universities and Elon's law school meets more of the college town standard than Asheville, though its a rather sleepy place for a city of its size.

Any list of best college towns that doesn't include Boone is a joke anyway.

Greenville is most definitely a college town just a bit bigger than Boone or Chapel Hill with more industry. Boone is a really nice place though I love it there. Would love to eventually see a home and home with App and East Carolina if you ever expand your stadium. Just so I can make a trip to Boone for a football game

I didn't know Texas state was in Austin. Most people outside of Texas consider San Marcos a suburb of San Antonio, so that would explain not making the list.

No because it is the live music capital of the world, has a legendary party scene, and has awesome places to eat that can cook more than one type of food. Don't get me wrong I spent a week in Lafayette had a lot of fun and got my cajun food fix, especially at johnson's something forgot the name, but it doesn't hold a candle to Austin.

Probably because Austin has nearly a million people and doesn't fit the profile. I think Lafayette's the largest metro listed there. I'm surprised Boone's not on there.

None of this matters, X At this point in time. April 6, 2014... UL would whip the living manure out of ECU in all major sports...maybe not womens basketball? That there is no debate. They can be AAC or SEC, it wouldnt matter.

Z, do not know why the guy had to try and rain on a parade. But I guess when you have no parade????????
He said something about having done nothing and being nobody yet I seem to recall this:
2000 CWS, ECU came to the Tigue something about their stadium not ready. Yea, they lost that to us too. In fact the Cajuns owned the Carolinas that year, beating no. 1 South Carolina after ECU getting to the CWS, and then ending the Clemson run in the CWS.

If you think Lafayette only has one great type of food you should have asked some who lives here. That's like saying Austin only has good Barbecue.

Godzilla only knows Japanese food, men, women, children burned and squashed. She can't help not knowing good eating.

Bozeman is bigger than Moscow, by population at least. Bozeman has 39,000 while Moscow has 25,000 people. Unless you counting Pullman, Wa. as part of Moscow. Don't get me wrong, I love it in Moscow. It's in the prettiest part of the State.

Most people don't realize how pretty Idaho is if they have just been to Boise. 30 min out of Boise and it gets beautiful in the mountains.

I miss the swamps of Louisiana, but I love the Idaho mountains and whitewater.

I can't wait until the Cajuns play Idaho in Moscow. I will be there for sure. The Cajuns play Boise St. this year in Boise, while Boise is a pretty city, it's in the desert part of Idaho and it definitely isn't a college town, when they couldn't sellout there small stadium being ranked as high as they were. Boise is a pretty city to visit, definitely.

I just hope the fans that do make the trip up here to Boise this year will realize Boise is on the foothills of the Rockies in the high desert and that the rest of the State is alot different.

The point I'm trying to make is just north of Boise, once you get in the mountains, it is awesome. I just dont want them to think the Moscow area is like Boise and dont go to the Idaho games in Idaho.

I second this! And I actually spent some great drunken nights in Greenville when my brother was in school there. Great atmosphere on fall Saturdays too. Downtown is fun, but you definitely have to be careful what street you walk down afterwards.
Appfan was right, those really are the only three college towns in NC. Asheville is similar to a college town as far as culture goes, but with hipsters and aging hippies instead. If it was a list of best towns to hang out in, I'd definitely put it on there! But UNCA is a school of about 3,000 students, and not even on the radar in Asheville.
