RE: ECU @ Rice baseball weekend.
With the exception of our 2009 squad, I never really thought Rice faced one of our really great squads. Not their fault it's ours. But really really would've loved to see them battle with some of our teams in the early 2000s.

Very true. The games were actually at Rice University though. Btw, Rice has surprisingly now lost 5 of their last 7 overall, and 4 of their last 6 conference games. Slump perhaps?

Certainly not this is the first series ECU has ever beaten Rice in the nearly decade we've been playing.

Yes, I was aware the games were to be played at Rice. I'd have considered you guy winning 1 of 3 something of a moral victory because Rice is usually so good, especially at home.
Not sure what's going on with them right now. I wish more of their baseball fans posted here so we'd get the inside poop. Anyway, yes, for whatever reason, slump....and a big one at a bad time. Their RPI sits at 21 right now so there's still time to recover and perhpas gain a regional, but they surely can't keep playing like this and expect to host.

Played yesterday as part of a doubleheader due to impending weather. USM took the games 7-0 & 7-6 to win the series.

Wow, I just looked at your schedule and you guys are really in the thick of things at this point. Coming off a series win at Tulane and hosting Marshall this coming weekend could leave you in an excellent position going into the last third of the regular season. Of course, then comes ODU and they're playing some excellent ball right now too.
Speaking of ODU, East Carolina steps out of the frying pan and into the fire when they visit Old Dominon. It'll be interesting to see if they can retain the intensity that gave them their quality series win over Rice.
UAB sits at the top currently but they sure have been peppered with a lot of loses over the last couple of weeks and they've got a "show down" series this coming weekend with USM.
From an outsider's viewpoint, I'd say the race to the finish line in C-USA this year will be as interesting as any and may end up looking like that traffic jam you guys experienced in basketball.
Good luck! I'll be watching.

The key to a championship is to beat the teams you should beat.....
bottom tier (that is why ECU in second place) and
going head to head with top tier of teams. Rice was nice series
win (2 of 3) but there are still top tier teams to play and beat
(USM, etc).

RE: ECU @ Rice baseball weekend.
Knew something was up. Apparently turns out that two of Rice's starting pitchers are injured, at least that's what a fellow Roadrunner said. I don't know what the injuries are, who the pitchers are, or how long they'll be out, but I can definitely see that making a difference in some of their close losses. Just seemed too weird for a team of their quality to start out 20-7 (8-1) and suddenly lose 5 of 7 and 4 of 6 conference games to fall to 22-12 (10-5).
