I try to remind myself not to bash ECU just because a few people decide to come over and talk crap, ECU has a lot of really good fans who shouldn't be lumped in with people who will even trash talk about basketball

That's the sign of a mature poster. . It irks me how some can throw an entire fan base under the bus because of a minority of displeasing fans. Sure, some fan bases are more terrible than others (Maryland comes to mind) but over all your messageboard posters are going to be A. Die hard fans who want to discuss sports (and may get a little emotional from time to time) or B. people who wish to hide behind their keyboards to talk smack and get their jollies in life.

I think you're right.... In fact, I think he waited until SDSU returned to the MWC before negotiating the tv contract if I’m not mistaken….

Boise, SDSU, Air Force, and BYU were pursued as a package for a very long time. So, 4 members west of the Rockies was clearly sought at one point. Personally, I think the best long term package for the AAC is an 18 team national all-sports conference with 5-6 members west of the Rockies. That would allow a western division of Houston, SMU, Tulsa, Boise, SDSU, Fresno, UNLV, and one of BYU/New Mexico/Air Force (I prefer BYU or New Mexico). The east could add Army. Im ambivalent about Air Force. I think we are better off with a school like BYU or New Mexico as each has a much greater upside than Air Force will ever have. Army and Navy are the big academy draws.

But not as all-sports additions. The western football affiliates had to make their own arrangements for their Olympic sports--BYU in the WCC, SDSU in the Big West, Boise STate in the WAC then the Big West, Air Force approached the Summit I think and got cold-shouldered.

And I don't think AFA and BYU were seen as a package. By the end of 2011, it was pretty clear the conference was having trouble getting either one, never mind both. There were 13 schools signed up to play Big East Football, and one opening. And the best candidates (BYU, AFA) out west, favored over the eastern options (ECU, Tulane, Tulsa, UMass). But they were favored because they're BYU and Air Force, not because of geography.

Just for speculation. What are the down sides to adding VCU and Wichita state for basketball only?

Plus side: adds upper tier basketball programs for more prowess and recognition.

Plus side: would bring more money during next negotiation.
