Interesting thread across the street

I contrast many of those comments to what AppState and Georgia Southern have accomplished as FCS teams, beating Michigan and Florida respectively.

I'm glad the two above-mentioned programs are joining the Belt.

Dead on you don't get better unless you play better teams. When we scheduled UF it was when they were on top. Did we get lucky to catch them at the right time? Yes, but someone smarter than me said luck is nothing more than preparation meeting opportunity. When we played AL we racked up the most yards and scored the most points on them the entire year I believe. Oh and it was none of that garbage time scoring either. We also nearly shut them out in the fourth quarter but Saban felt the need to score one more with 00:44 seconds left in the ball game. Even in a loss you can come out with some good positives when you play one of the all time best teams. I just appraised an AL fans house the other day, and he brought up us coming the closest other than LSU as any other team that year beating them. So now AL fans have some respect for us and know who we are not some scared team that will not play them even with 22 more full scholarships than that "little" ole FCS team from GA did.
Glad the overall feeling in this conference is anytime anywhere. ODU has no business turning that game down, they were a competitive FCS playoff team. No marbles 05-nono

Gonna have to agree with the odu ad on this. They already have games against p5 and one is a home game. I'm sure they'll get a nice payday game in a couple years. Also their fans are right. Their defense is horrible. Now if they always turn down a game against a top 5 team then they have no marbles.

I am not so sure you need to worry about Odu's marbles.

Your claim "you don't get better unless you play better teams" I believe they had Five (5) FBS programs on the 2013 schedule three ACC schools (Pitt, UNC, Maryland along with Idaho and ECU four of those schools went bowling. I don't think GaSU or App had 5 FBS schools on your 1st transitional year schedule. I understand they also received payday checks well over $3,000,000.00 for those games. They have already scheduled VA Tech for a 7 game series stating in 2017, three in Norfolk. They have a payday game this year (2014) with Vanderbilt, ($1,000,000.00) and have a home and home game series scheduled with NC State, starting this year and a return to Norfolk in 2015. They have other FBS teams OOC on the schedule for the future. I also understand they are working on a home and home with Virginia.

Moving forward, it looks like they are working toward home and home with other P5 schools. The AD at Odu has been very aggressive with his philosophy for scheduling. The 757 is a very attractive area for other FBS programs to increase recruiting visibility. I think for them it was a good decision.

Not to disparage UNC, Pitt, Maryland, or Idaho but they ain't Alabama. Would they have been bowl eligible in the SEC? When you have an opportunity to play the likes of Alabama you take it. IMO.

RE: Interesting thread across the street
For G-5 teams, an early season drubbing at the hands of Alabama would all but end any chance of cracking the Top 25 that year. Those kind of money games are the primary reason that no SBC team has ever been ranked in the Top 25. Taking on Miss St is one thing, Alabama is another. When Tech made it into the Top 25 two years ago, we had wins over over Virginia, Illinois, and Ole Miss, all three P-5 conference teams, but none a perennial Top 5 program like Alabama. Since then, its been almost impossible for us to get that "second tier" type P-5 team to schedule us. This season, we have the privilege of opening at Oklahoma, followed by a game at Auburn. I dread both of these games and I wish that our AD hadn't agreed to play them, but until money games are no longer necessary for us to fund our overall athletic program, we'll play them every year. Who knows, sometimes you get lucky and catch a program when its down. Auburn DID look kind of shaky in that CHAMPIONSHIP game, right??????

RE: Interesting thread across the street
Using us as an example on their board isn't going to do a lot. I had to endure a lot of "we're the best startup in the history of the division" type talk (although they don't realize that honor goes to us, winning 2 national championships in our first 3 years of eligibility). We're a bit of a dirty word in their vocabulary after the games we've had with them.

They're worried about bowl eligibility as well.....but they're transitional this year. They can win the conference, but unless there are not enough teams to fill the bowl slots, then they can't go to a bowl.

You can schedule a lot of BCS type teams, but Georgia Southern beat ODU in the playoffs recently two years in a row.
We will get to see what they have next year when we play them. Just not impressed too much when ODU asked
North Carolina to shorten their game this year after UNC had scored 80 on them before the end of the third quarter.
Will see.

This one had me a bit baffled. They are a better team than that. Albeit their defense has NEVER been good.

ODU already had 12 games scheduled. They would have to screw someone else just to add another payday.

This.

What game should ODU have cancelled tomake room for a beatdown in Tuscaloosa?

Some of you people are pretty ridiculous.

I'm glad the two above-mentioned programs are joining the Belt.

Did you even read what the AD said? OD already had a 12 game schedule. What are they supposed to do? Your obsession with all things CUSA is amusing. And sad.

I did read what their AD said, but you make a valid point. It would be the first time in college football history that a team cancelled or rescheduled someone in order to play another team a year or two out. I completely understand a team not wanting to make that kind of history.

As for obsessions, please stop with the propositioning PM's. I don't swing that way.05-nono

Got to agree with the CUSA folks here. They already had 12 games scheduled, no need to cancel one for the Bama payday. If they still had an OOC game opening, then I'd start bagging on them.

They bag on us all the time so I'll feel free to bag where I see bagging warranted.

And, as usual, numbnuts on both sides of the aisle are completely missing the point here, of which there are more than one.

For instance, talk to a Cooser, like golden panties, and he'll tell you all day long what a great football conference they've joined and that the newbies they've signed up are solid, and have a lot of potential......even moreso than the Belt which some have said is in decline or weakened because all the good teams have gone to Coosaland.

Yet you read what many of those fans say in the subject thread and they're scared crapless to step on the field with someone like Bama. You'd swear they'd soiled their diapers at the very thought of such a thing.

As I said, I'm glad the Belt has recruited programs like App State and Georgia Southern who not only have a solid history of winning, but who also aren't scared crapless to walk out on to the field with the likes of Michigan and Florida. They not only showed up, they won.
