To Long Term member of the Sun Belt
You 2 are sort of the old guard now of the Sun Belt. How do you feel your school would view adding UMass as a football only member?

I could not see ASU supporting UMass unless it was a situation where we were guaranteed all sports invites to Missouri State and NMSU.

I am torn on an invitation. If they would agree to a scheduling alliance in basketball similar to what the MAC had...I could see the benefit to a football only invite, provided we still picked up an East and West all sports school closer by.

South Alabama is a founding member and has been a member fifteen years longer than Arkansas State and Louisiana.

A scheduling alliance like that would open up a can of worms with us that is for sure. We are essentially the same as UMass.

I have a hard time seeing UMass get the votes to join, even as a football only.

Thank you. I didn't want to have to post it.

Why isn't Troy an old guard, too, if football is the barometer?

No offense, but you guys are not close to Umass. They are much better at basketball, and your football potential is much better.

The question becomes. Lets say the league goes to a 14/14 alignment

West

Idaho (UTA)
NMSU
Missouri State
AState
ULL
Texas State
ULM

East

Umass
JMU/Liberty/EKU
Georgia State
Georgia Southern
App State
Troy
USA

In this alignment...Every West team has go to Idaho, but plays at UMass once every 5 years or so by the time you run the scheduling. Every East school has to go to UMass, but plays at Idaho once every 5 years.

If UMass then agreed to play 4 rotating SBC Basketball teams in a home and home each year...it would then give everyone an opportunity to significantly increase basketball OOC Scheduling, while still offering substantial improvements to travel schedules all sports, and limiting Long Trips in football to 1 a year.

UMass is no more ridiculous than Idaho and easier to fly to than Idaho.

I don't really think the distinction is necessary, running a football program is not that much different and it's not like it's the basketball and softball coaches running the program, they have football people running their football program. USA is the old guard of the SBC.

He is talking about perception and clearly he regards things in that manner. USA just hasn't been at the football game long enough to gain much recognition.

Considering USA is literally 4 seconds away from tying for a co-championship and 11 seconds away from winning it outright... I think that is just a matter of time. USA lost their 3 SBC games by a combined 4 points. USA Football is trending upward!

RE: To Louisiana and Ark.St.
Would be a battle over who gets the UMass basketball games. Would think the current good
basketball teams should have first digs if that is part of the agreement with UMass.
However it was only a few games they played with the MAC each year so that would
have to be battled out. Good BB games would mean more to the schools who have
pursued basketball recognition more than other SBC members.

I believe the OP did not mean to offend anyone but being new to the SBC just thought
of who did really well in football recently.

Maybe you missed it, but he said football only. South Alabama is not a founding member in football. That honor goes to UL, ASU and Troy.
