GATA was coined by legendary coach Erk Russell. It stands for "Get After Their Asses", or even "Get After That Ass", depending on the use. Some will argue just the former use, but it can be used singular or plural.

RE: Georgia Southern's journey
how is it pronounced?

like gatt-uh

or

gay-tuh

cause if it's the second one then there's totally new meaning.

source: the word data.

I've heard both pronunciations, but mostly gat-uh. It's also not really a "spoken" chant. More of something you just see written. You'll never hear the fans chanting it.

I've heard it as both. When pronounced as a word, it is da-tah not day-tah.

FYI: It is more often pronounced as a word than not.

I know a lot of former players who always said it like :"Gate - ah"

Monken always said it differently than I had ever heard anyone else say it up to that point. "Dat - ah"

Both are oorrect - as long as you "do" it "right" - there is no wrong way to say it!
