Sun Belt Conference votes to expand
Our AD, T. Kleinlein, has a monthly segment when he answers questions about Ga. Southern athletics. A question was asked today about the Sun Belt meetings in New Orleans a week or so ago.

He said the conference has voted to expand to add a 12th fb playing school. He said a 12th school would help the conference not only in having a championship game but also in all the olympic sports in reducing travel also. He said conference was in process right now of identifying potential members for the conference.

So maybe I jumped the gun a little by saying earlier that there would be no expansion by June 1. Our AD did not say we would expand by then but he clearly says expansion is going to occur and the conference has voted to add a 12th FB playing school.

Not really any news.

It's pretty obvious we are going to expand to 12 eventually. When is the question.

I'm not sure how obvious. There were several people on this board saying the SBC doesn't need to expand and have a Championship game. There's a whole thread about it.

Yep. We know now we are evaluating schools and we are going to 12. The only question is whether it will be before June 1 of this year. I think if we don't add a 12th this year it is almost a given that we will before next year.

The main thing out of this is that the football school will be oly as well. No mention of another non football to get NMSU, add NMSU alone, or add a football only and then the NMSU oly.

I think if JMU would have been willing to join last year we probably would have 12. Fast forward a year later and I can see the Sun Belt moving on past JMU if they still don't want to join.

Well that is fantastic news. The question now is who....when...I don't think that is a question...not sure they would have voted at the bball tournament to expand if they were going to wait until next year to do it. JMU and Liberty applied. Two horse race. Who do they want?

You confuse posters on a message board with presidents and decision makers.

Going to 11 wasn't just for funsies. It was because Benson promised JMU last year. He couldn't deliver them, but JMU never gave a no. That caused the conference to look in other directions (Missouri State: who it seems has always been on the radar, but discussions expanded, and EKU).

It's a known quantity that Liberty is there any time we want. No one else is going to expand to pick them up, so it comes down to who says yes first (Missouri State, JMU, or EKU)... Or for the Liberty folks, when the others say no (and that's assuming no other candidates step up their commitment and become viable).

Actually we went to 11 because we didn't expect AAC to lose Louisville which led to CUSA losing Tulsa, which led to losing WKU. Twelve is in the bag until that happened.

It is hard to take comments like this seriously....It is hard for me to comprehend how EKU is even still in the discussion. As much as some of the SBC President's do not like Liberty, if they have even medicore logical reasoning skills they can see that EKU is nowhere near ready for FBS football.

REV...are you actually serious when you say that EKU would be a better option for the SBC than Liberty? How can that be justified? I want facts here.. I want numbers. I want logic and sound reasoning. Put all ill feelings aside and tell me exactly how EKU would be a better fit than Liberty for the SBC. Ready, go -

TK went out of his way to say that it isn't just a football expansion. He mentioned that GSU fans tend to only concentrate on football but the SBC expansion would affect all sports, not just football.

3 things to take away from what he said...

1. (As mentioned above) SBC expansion is going to affect all sports not just football.

2. The conference wants to get that 12th FB member so that we can have a conference championship game.

3. The goal and focus is to keep the members as compact geographically as possible so that travel isn't too taxing on student-athletes (and budgets I'm sure).

What remains to be seen (and was not addressed in this month's feature) is if this means that the SBC will add a FB-only member and take NMSU or Idaho in as a full member or if the SBC will add a full member and keep NMSU/Idaho as FB-only.

We aren't the best option for football. But we are clearly the best option for Olympics.

RE: Sun Belt Conference votes to expand
I took what he said to mean we are expanding by 1 team who will be a football-playing school but also play olympic sports.

I see very little chance to none that we invite a 12th member who is only a football playing member. We are looking for an 12th member who is an all sports member.
