RE: 2014-2015 Basketball OOC Schedule
I just really wish ODU had eliminated one of the guarantee games (UMES, Mt. St. Marys, or NC A&T) and gone on the road to a top 50 RPI school.
Otherwise the schedule is ok, but not quite what myself or some other ODU fans want to see.

Yep. I guess the extended conference schedule combined with the guarantee games limited our options, thus the question...

I don't know if Jackson St will be a easy win but we need to start scheduling easy (if there is such a thing), winnable, OOC road games, instead of the top teams.
That's one way to boost the RPI.....you get 1.4 for a road win and .6 for a home win.
I can remember some losses MT has taken in SWAC gyms. Tough place to play, esp. with their refs.
Yep, it's been a long, long time in the making. I know I don't recall the words headlining, Middle Tennessee, and basketball in the same sentence in my lifetime.
After decades of mediocrity its gratifying as an alumnus to become semi-relative in men's basketball.

Even Bruce Stewart lost a couple in SWAC gyms.
We struggled just a year and a half ago to defeat Savannah State in their gym, albeit MEAC.

RE: 2014-2015 Basketball OOC Schedule
Hey maybe VCU will crack the top 25 when they visit so we can knock em back down! With Mason and Richmond as well that's 3 pretty solid A10 teams. That schedule shouldn't be a detriment if ODU ends the season on the bubble. On the flip side it won't help them either...

RE: 2014-2015 Basketball OOC Schedule
Apparently we'll have Miami at home again, which means we'll play at least 2 ACC schools this year.
Also working on games with Georgetown and/or George Mason.
Haven't heard anything else about it in a while, but it sounded promising that we'd get a SEC game or two this season as well. Hopefully that will work out.

RE: 2014-2015 Basketball OOC Schedule
I'm not trying to start crap, but that is an awful schedule for what is predicted to be the premier team in the conference next season. I hope you guys can find at least a couple of games ooc against big name opponents, even if it's on the road. I understand all the problems la tech has with scheduling, but we can't have our best team doing nothing out of conference.

I don't know what can be done, but I definitely don't want to see USM levels of whining if you dominate that OOC schedule (which you should) and then don't get an at large bid if you fail to win the conference tournament.
If Tech truly can't schedule better than that when they're pretty much guaranteed to be a solid win / not a bad loss then Michael White is going to eventually take a less than ideal offer at a place that offers him that opportunity. Tech fans say he won't leave for anywhere but Ole Miss (and probably elite level jobs), and I believe that, but at a certain point he's going to get frustrated with being invisible.
What is that a MEAC, 2 Southland, 1 Big South, and 2 non-scholarship teams? That's pretty damn bad. Make's USM's schedule from last year look pretty good.
I hope those final spots fill up with at least somewhat respectable teams.

AU is. I thought Morehead State was, but maybe that is only for football.

the only reason AU is even on the schedule is because three of those home games: Presbyterian, AU, & Morehead St are part of a 3 games in 3 days tournament
and I believe AU made the NCAA tournament last March

Morehead State plays in the Pioneer Football league and does not have scholarship football. They are still members of the OVC in everything else and give out scholarships. For the most part Morehead State is usually on Marshall's schedule since the 2 schools are only 91 miles apart. That is except for the 6 years that Donnie Tyndall was HC at MSU, for some reason he refused to schedule us.

So it is your fault he left for UT.

Nope, but I just want to see Tech well positioned for an at large if they don't win the conference. Tech will be a great team, but even great teams face upsets and there will likely be a few teams that can take down Tech in the conference next year and I'm afraid with a schedule like what you have so far you dont have a prayer at an at large if you need it.

it's not like Tech's not trying and that's probably why CUSA and more conferences are going to less OOC games

I know they're trying. This is one area where an older coach with a lot of industry ties can definitely help. Obviously White is a great coach you wouldn't get rid of, just saying that coaches with a long history working with other coaches can certainly help (ie Haase at UAB getting the UNC games). Big time coaches are willing to help those in their coaching tree.

As we've seen in recent years, RPI only matters so much in our conference. Our best teams have to play, and win, games against relevant opponents. This has nothing to do with what you will do to our RPIs, it has everything to do what it will do to you. Going 12-1 OOC and 14-2 in conference with that schedule is likely to make the committee say meh, a lot of teams could probably do that. Our top teams have to play and win top 50 games OOC. Period.
