ECU had a decent team last year. We just built a 17 million practice facility and gave an extension to Jeff Lebo. Next year we should be better than this year as we have several transfers and a few good new recruits coming on board. By and large however, ECU has always struggled with basketball. I think we are really going to struggle in the AAC and imo, will be a bottom team for many years to come.
Also, I do not want to come a crossed in my posts as being anti Conf USA. I am not. Nor do I have anything bad to say about the schools that are currently in the conference, including the ones that joined Conf USA recently. All of the school in Conf USA and the Sun Belt are fine schools.
In terms of sports however, when I look at schools like App State, Ga Southern, Ark State, Louisiana and even a rising South Alabama, I really do not think that Conf USA has any teams that are better or has teams that have any more potential than the ones that I just listed.
Currently however, Conf USA does have a better TV contract and more money. They also still benefit from Conf USA as a brand. Keeping that contract however and keeping that brand are going to be uphill battles, and ones that I do not think they can win. There is no Memphis for example waiting in the wings, there is no UCF, or even a Houston to generate excitement or buzz. On the other hand, Ga Southern and App State for example, have made names for themselves as dominant players in the FCS league. Ul and Ark State have also recently made names for themselves.
Conversely, Marshall and Southern Miss are two high quality schools that also bring with them an excellent reputation in football. It would be great if somehow a conference was created that showcased the best of Conf USA and the best of the Sun Belt. This would imo be a conference that could be contender amongst the G5.
