If Wellman refuses to fire Bzdelik... get an AD who will!

Wake Forest needs to be good in basketball again, a few years ago this state was rocking Wake was #1 and The state of North Carolina had top 10 battles between Duke Wake and UNC in 2009 it was fun

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
There is a strong a rumor circulating that Wellman has already contacted Ben Howland and has an understanding with him. Wellman wants Howland to keep the current assistants though.

I would prefer at least making a pitch to Marshall and Shaka first, but all in all that would be about the strongest hire we could make given our candidate list.

Who tells a new head coach to keep someone else's assistants on? That's a deal breaker for most candidates.

Howland would be an excellent get. I'd take him over Smart, to be honest.

It wouldn't be the first time Wake has "requested" the assistants to be kept on since we just did that in the last search. That doesn't make the rumor true however. I would take most of the rumors from our boosters about hires with a grain of salt at this stage.

Ben Howland seems like a good coach. He's turned around every place he's been, and took UCLA to the Final Four a few times, IIRC. Not sure why they fired him last year, though.

UCLA isn't satisfied with Final Fours. UCLA fancies itself a Duke, UNC and Kentucky. His style wasn't showtime enough for LA either. After the Final Fours, that program went on a slow decline and negativity built in the media. He had issues with a lot of players leaving early and there was no patience for the inevitable down years.

RE: Wake Forest's Search for a New Basketball Coach
The sole ACC school that’s shown interest in taking on Wichita State, according to Marshall, is Wake Forest. “To be honest with you, we don’t think they’re good enough,” he said. “They don’t help our schedule.”

Of course the Deacons may be under new bench management next season. Marshall’s name has surfaced as a possible replacement for Jeff Bzdelik, who’s in the process of posting his fourth underwhelming record in four years at Winston-Salem. (Marshall also reportedly was considered for the N.C. State job in 2011.) But the 51-year-old South Carolina native, who spent nine seasons at Winthrop before moving to Kansas in 2007-08, said he’s not particularly interested in coaching at Wake should the opportunity arise.

“They would have to have a Brinks truck” full of money, said Marshall, who earns about $2 million annually. “I’ve got a pretty good situation here. We can win. We sell out every game. They really like me here.”

That quote from Marshall is pretty interesting especially if you hate typical coach speak answers.

A pessimist will focus on him saying we suck and he doesn't have much interest in coaching us.

An optimist would point out he just dared Wake to offer him a boatload of cash. That's something we all already knew would be a requirement.

I give him credit for at least admitting that he can be lured by money.

Seriously, though, the P5 conferences are going to pull even farther away from the mid-majors in revenue in the near future and this is going to be a serious problem for those types of schools....the WSUs, Butlers, VCU's, etc.

Just an FYI, an average Brink's truck carries about 3 million dollars.

IMO Marshall is going to bide his time in Wichita. All he has to do is be patient and his dream job will be open soon enough. The first domino fell yesterday.

Martin wasn't a Ray Tanner hire.

Marshall laughed at South Carolina the last time their job came open.

Marshall has done enough to earn a much better gig than SC.

I do wonder if a place like Wake would be intriguing to him. You can win at Wake. It's been proven.

That was under former AD Eric Hyman, who lowballed Marshall in salary and contract length both times Marshall showed interest in the job. Hyman for whatever reason twice bucked what the Gamecock Club wanted and hired first Darrin Horn and then Frank Martin. Hyman is now in College Station and the Gamecock Club's choice for AD will be making the decision this time around. When they replace Martin they will not be making any lowball offers. They can't afford a third miss after Dave Odum ran their program in the ground.

Dave Odom ran their sorry program into the ground? That happened decades before Odom came along. South Carolina basketball has been irrelevant since they left the ACC and they weren't terribly relevant then.

What kind of Clemson fan has anything good to say about the Gamecocks anyway?

Dunno about irrelevant. Eddie Folger had made them a consistent threat in the SEC and won the SEC before the AAU types effectively ran him out of the business.

And yes, Dave Odom ran them in the dirt when he essentially retired on active duty after the second NIT title and only went through the motions bot coaching and recruiting.

I hope Frank Martin stays in Columbia because he's capable of embarrassing them at any times with his over the top antics and I figure the longer he is there the greater the chance that he follows in his idol Huggybear's shoes and commits major NCAA violations. But the facts are the facts, Hyman bucked the Gamecock Club over Marshall and that is a huge reason why he's in College Station right now. The only reason Ray Tanner is their AD is that's what the Gamecock Club wanted.

It would be shocking if Marshall took the South Carolina job.

Kaplony is right about 1 thing - the next time SC hires a basketball coach, I expect them to throw major amounts of cash at him. The Gamecocks actually have a decent hoops tradition which is being ruined by the last 2 coaches.
