Why make these comments? Our product has been complete crap for the last 10 years. 730 is just trying to get listeners. We aren't providing that with our awful basketball product, and at one time, that was our bread and butter. Their basketball isn't great, but they could probably get comparable numbers as of late. Congrats to the Apps.

As for the quality of signal from 730... I'll let the App fans figure that one out.

he was an ass but you are wrong as well. this has nothing to do with 730 picking app over uncc for ratings. this has everything to do with the apps state athletic department being smart and understanding that the charlotte market is important enough to pay what they had to not only outbid uncc for games but getting additional coverage as well.

Whiteboard, stop taking the internet so serious. It's good thing for the App fans in South Charlotte but far from some sort of game changer.

If it's not a big deal why be concerned with it then?
You wouldn't think it's the end of the world, but ninernation.net almost has that mood. Guess it puts your only viable option as fnz. Their signal is so weak I lose it driving out of my driveway.
Do like the added programming App State will let them use. Will ensure that we have 3.5 hours of pregame shows before each football game. You can drive from Charlotte to Boone twice in that time period, or from Columbia,SC; so will be hyped when fans get to the games.

3.5 hours before the game is hour two or three of tailgate time. But I do like listening to the pregame.

Yep, tell that to the millions of people that commute more than 10 minutes to and from work every day.

Do people really listen to radio in their cars these days?

For sports talk; yes.

ESPN being a gleaming example.

Probably for the same reasons you post on a message board about sports. Of course message boards are mainly composed of rational, non biased folks who never go over the top like most radio hosts......03-lmfao
Local sports talk is informative about the teams you probably follow, national shows are not real interesting to me.

Yup, I do.

I have blue tooth in my car, but only listen to my music on my phone for long trips where I don't feel like finding a station on the radio as I move from one coverage area to another.

I have XM/Sirius in my car too, but rarely listen to it, unless I'm on long trips, even then it's rare. But I will if I get bored with my music on my phone.

My wife listens to NPR just about all the time. She even has the volume cranked, which I don't understand how you can jam out to NPR.

Rumor is 610, which is Charlotte's top sports radio station. It's a pretty terrible station full of ACC homers though. 730 was pretty friendly to us while 610 laughs at anyone not in the ACC or SEC.

I don't personally care because I don't listen to the radio. We have all our home games guaranteed on television for the next two years and it is fairly likely that all of our games will be on television this year since none of our away games are more than 3 hours away.

Well dang, UNCC has a football team now? 05-stirthepot

730 is expanding their coverage with new towers. Do anyone think ESPN would affiliate with a media outlet that doesn't have intentions on being the best in that market? The 610 personalities could make a run for first place on the all arrogant jerk list.

We switched to 2.5 hours of pregame for home games this year and it worked really well. I wish we would do it more for away games.

I agree the morning and evening shows on 610 are the jerk store's #1 and #2 best sellers.

Yea because it's not like the vast majority of sports fans are brainless zombies listening to ESPNs take as the word of god... It's not like all we complain about is how espn centric casual fans are like every other minute on this board.... Doesn't matter if they are stupid, the casual fan likes to listen.

It's quite convincing, no?

My original question was not to offend or put anyone on the defensive. I am someone who only browses sport websites, often the ones directly created by my team, so I have very little experience with local sports radio/tv programs. I assumed they were similar to ESPN and, like we all know, ESPN is garbage.

My Sports Pages:
NHL.com
Tampa Bay Lightning
Miami Dolphins
Manchester City FC

The only sport "programs" I deal with.

It works a lot the same listen to a radio program specific to that regions sports and it's very in depth and a lot of the sportscasters for that region on the regional radio program are actually much more involved and intelligent when they talk about the sports; I.e. Chuck Keaton the Carolina hurricanes caster who had played for the canes when they were the Hartford whalers and has devoted his life to the canes and hockey, he's in his late 60s and I consider him legendary. One case in point is he gets just as excited for the other teams goals and even being an American said he didn't see the us team reaching the finals pointing out the strong teams from Sweden and Canada, the lack of bias he shows and love of the game is astounding and makes me even more excited for his sportscasting of the hurricanes games

Actually both AM and FM are really strong right now due to the popularity of apps such as tunein and iHeartRadio. What's happening is in some small to medium markets radio stations are being bought out by big companies such as Clear Channel. Not only now might your local morning show be airing out of Chicago while your in Wilmington North Carolina but your noon time DJ might not be at your local station she or he might be working out of Orlando. Radio is still strong for the consumer just the way we receive it is changing.

RE: ESPN730 Charlotte to replace UNCC with App State
The UNC-C fans popping in here minus the one with a brain crack me up.

Trolling the bandwidth and signal strength of a Charlotte radio station that with high powered receivers I can get in the mountains 2 1/2 hours away. I lived in Anson County going in the opposite direction and still had the 730 AM signal.

This is a good move for App due to the large contingent of alums in the Charlotte area.

Some of these delusional Niner fans are only just starting to see that the whole city of Charlotte isn't nor will it ever be their oyster. Sour grapes.

Just as an addendum to this thread, Charlotte 49ers are back on WFNZ The Fan. For what its worth, App is getting a great radio partner in ESPN 730. I was very pleased with their coverage of the 49ers and if App gets even half what 730am did for us it will still be pretty good. WFNZ was not a good home for us the first time we were on their station and they have a lot to prove to most Charlotte fans this time around.

I hope it works out, in the future I would like to see UNCC do well since it's the only other school I really thought about going to after the hoity toitys at unc chose my friend who lied about helping an outcast kid feel loved over me even though I had better academic scores, so I want y'all to have success but always lose to my mountaineers and always be second fiddle to us, but successful even then.

Honestly, I mostly feel the same way about App. Some of my closest friends went to school there.
