A union state and school in the long term could be at a huge disadvantage.

It would cause chaos between haves and have-nots. It would cause chaos between union state conferences and schools and right to work conferences and schools. It would cause chaos when union schools players went on strike. It would have all sorts of other issues I can't even think of.

It will ruin college football. This will have an affect on the big boys too.

Just the tip of the iceberg of the problems that will come up from paying players. This is only the beginning of this madness.

Pandora's box, once it's opened, it can't be closed again.

If the unions happen then college athletics are going out of business.

OK...so who pays the union dues? It appears the unions, struggling for the last few years with declining numbers, see the big pot of money from players being paid and they want a slice of the pie too.

Union officials only have six million dollar mansions.
They feel like they deserve eight million dollar mansions.

The proposed union wants one time transfer without penalty for football players.
When will the first strike come?

So when a guy who had only a Texas State offer gets developed by Texas State at considerable expense the Longhorns can come grab him with no penalty. Sounds great eh?

That's just another scenario that no one thinks of when they make these proposals.

Bottom line is players are employees. Nothing amateur about college sports. I applaud this move by the players and hope they win.

RE: How will this hurt/help college sports?
Another thing... Let's just use a hypothetical:

Say you have a big game coming up this Saturday. For this example we will use Mississippi State at South Alabama. On Thursday or Friday the MSU players strike and boycott the game at USA for "unfair" treatment from MSU. What does USA do? If MSU players don't show up then MSU forfeits the game, but USA will lose money on lack of ticket sales and concessions. What about ticket sales that have already occurred? Do those patrons get a refund? What about out of town guests in hotels? Would they be able to get their money back? Would they go after USA or MSU? Can the union be held liable? Probably what happens is USA is forced to sue MSU to recover losses it incurred from MSU forfeiting the game.

A variation to this example is say it is USA @ MSU and MSU players forfeit. Will USA get reimbursed for their travel expenses? And fans reimbursed for their tickets?

A union in this case would hurt a school that has nothing to do with the situation they are upset about. A union will end up being a disaster. These people are hoping that if they continue to make noise that 'they' will eventually start paying football players just like 'they' ended up and caving to the playoff idea. Bad, bad idea.

Your scenario has a big hole in it: We don't develop anything, except broken hearts.

RE: How will this hurt/help college sports?
College is the new NFL, and high school is the new college football. You can already see it, stadiums that are state of the art and cost millions at high schools. Alabama just started a class 7A, that will be the 32 largest high schools in the state, these are schools that already have a history of playing on ESPN. Soon there will be television deals and corp sponsored stadiums with luxury boxes. The NCAA and college football is running around with their heads cut off right now and it will run into a wall. It's a shame they had to start trying to fix something that very much was not broken.

Good then if we pay them like employees they can pick up the tab for tuition, books, food, internet, cable, housing, fees, medical, new union dues and all that free stuff they get that does not pertain directly with playing football. 07-coffee3

They will find that they've eliminated opportunities for a great many players.

But they'll be graduated so I don't guess it will make much difference to them.
