Have you noticed when he talks about the opposing team during a pregame or mid-game interview, he almost always says they have one of the best coaches in the game? He must have quite a long list...

Gotta love "Pastner Positivity"

Yes. He literally says the same thing every time. It's hilarious at this point.

We all know what Pastner is going to say before he actually says it. The OP is dead on.

Slow your roll fella. I'm the furthest thing from a Pastner hater. Love the guy, think he's an excellent coach. Doesn't mean I can't have some fun with his interview style.

RE: Pastner's pregame presser (vs. UCF this Wednesday)
Welcome to coach speak.

when you blow out a team "they're a tough team.. well coached, some great talent.. we just played amazing ball."

When you beat a team "they're a really tough team...well coached, some real talent on the roster..we're just playing the game that much better."

when you lose to a team "they're a really tough team...well coached, some real talent on the roster.. we just fell short."

lose to a team you shouldn't have " they're a really tough team, very underrated... great coach, good talent that gets overlooked.." or "we were looking ahead.."

then there are those pages in the coach speak book with a little dust on them:

"we rock, they're nobody...we own that loser school."

Yeah, I can't speak for other Tigers fans, but this kind of talk has gone on so long, for years, for every team no matter what, that all of the happy talk just endears me to our goofy coach.

And a goof he is, but he's our goofy guy.

I like Pastner but it is really painful to hear the exact same thing over and over. "South Florida (plug in any team you want) is a great team! They are well coached and just a really, really good team!" It would be refreshing to hear him break something down instead of using the same old cliches.

If Memphis can be competitive against UCF in football this year, then UCF can compete and win against Memphis in basketball. College basketball is much more unpredictable than college football.

Not this year it isn't. UCF is just painful to watch right now. Ugly, ugly basketball. Aside from maybe 3 or 4 guys, there is very little talent on this team. Memphis will win by 30-40, especially knowing how Pastner likes to keep his starters in to run up the score on weaker teams.

Holy cow. Did you really say that? 03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao03-lmfao

You haven't been paying attention. When we get up 20 or so, Pastner generally slows down the pace, or at least doesn't react much, when our players ease up the intensity.

Once we're up 20 in the second half, he sometimes puts the second team in, but they are better than a lot of other teams' starters. And they want to score, too. Not Pastner's fault.

Until the past couple of weeks, he did keep the starters in, but not to run up the score. He was playing a 7-man rotation, and was trying to fine tune some things. But we still slowed down our pace, took off the full court press, etc.

And when we get down to the last few minutes with a comfortable lead, he has us use up the shot clock before shooting. A couple of times, we just handed the ball back to the ref.

And recently, even the walk-ons have been getting in for a few minutes.

Finally, no matter who is in, he always keeps them from shooting the last possession or two.

There have been a few threads on the Memphis board griping about Pastner not letting us blow out lesser teams.

I'm thinking you haven't watched many of our games.

Coaches should never say the same thing. Fans want crap phrased differently before or after the game. This is all I know about good coaching.

There wouldn't be anything different between what he says and what other coaches say if he would give examples. His comments are so general and repetitive that they are difficult to have the perception of validity.

"Fill in player's name is an outstanding rebounder/defender/scorer/PG with ___ rebounds/steals/points/assists in his last game."

"Fill in coach's name is an outstanding coach; he's turned around _____, won 28 games______, won ______ conference titles, etc, etc."

In the end, however; his rhetoric is part of his seemingly innocent charm. He's obviously not as innocent as he's perceived or he wouldn't be able to compete as well he does in the recruiting wars. He's relentless in that arena.

In a perfect world, you are correct...as in football, UCF's football team is still made up of mostly 2-3 star players...just like Memphis' football team....but in basketball, Memphis' team is made up of mostly 4 star, and even 5 star players.

UCF's hoop team doesn't come close to that.

With loss of hoop scholarships and recruiting restrictions...UCF's Donnie Jones has had to make some "safe" signings...and UCF won't be back to full scholarships and no more on and off-campus recruiting restrictions till the 2015-2016 season...so this year and next will be some tough times for UCF Hoops.
