App. st wasn't the first fcs to beat a ranked fbs. Lamar was in beating SWC champions Baylor.

That was a good win, but technically it wasn't the first FCS to beat a ranked FBS team. The game was in 1981 when Lamar and the rest of the Southland Conference were classified as NCAA Division DI-A along with Baylor. The conference was reclassified to Division DI-AA the following year, 1982, along with several other conferences (Ivy League, Missouri Valley, Southern Conference, and maybe some others) for failing to meet attendance requirements.

A little off subject, but if I recall correctly, the Ragin' Cajuns went the independent route in football to stay D-1A for around 10 years. McNeese State qualified to stay D-1A as well, but chose to stay in the Southland Conference for football.

In the interest of full disclosure, while I am a supporter and alumni of Lamar University (as well as Texas A&M), I lived in Lafayette for three years. While there, my family were Ragin' Cajun "T-Shirt fans" with season tickets to the Ragin' Cajun football and basketball games. As long as one of the three teams don't play each other, I have no problems. :)

That's part of the reason I have continued to follow the Sun Belt Conference since the merger with the American South Conference.

If they were considered d1 a when they beat them then technically app was, realistically app wasn't, got the two word mixed as technically means within the considerations of the label whereas realistically Lamar was more a d1aa then d1a

I reread what I posted. I was unclear. My intent was to correct the comment about Lamar; not Appalachian State. Sorry.

In defense of SHWISH, I too had been under the same impression that the LU / Baylor game was a D-IAA / D-IA game up until a few years ago when I refreshed my memory about the timing of the game and the reclassification.
