That moniker is used to imply certain traits that Ucf does not demonstrate. Heck p5 is another for that matter.
Southern Cal is a directional school too. Any attempt to come up with some sort of criteria whereby a school with a directional name is not a directional school is simply arbitrary, and each person would have a different definition of it. Obviously, not all directional schools are at the same level in terms of program strength. USC got into a power conference a long time ago so it isn't like the other directional schools. ECU and UCF are probably the strongest other directional schools. UCF is much bigger than, e.g. NIU, and has a ton of potential. ECU has a huge fanbase. They're still directional schools though.
The implication that the poster was intimating was the derogatory use of the term.
Yes, and I don't put any stock in that use of the term. If the name of the school is directional, it's directional. It's like the illogical "mid-major" term. But I don't want to derail the thread.
Fwiw I wasn't attempting to knock niu
Yea it's just that "directional", while making it more difficult to succeed, is not a complete description. Obviously, USC, and UCF and ECU have improved their program despite a directional name. NIU's position is less due to a directional name than it is due to proximity to a pro-sports based urban area. Even U of I and Northwestern don't get the attention that most FBS schools do, because of that mentality in Illinois.

NIU is a big state school. It is a big state school like East Carolina is a big state school. UCF is a really big state school and just under Ohio State in size.

UCF is bigger than Ohio State. Arizona State is the biggest.

It's definitely the off-season.

Army has less than zero interest in the AAC. The C-USA experience is still felt at West Point.

if so...ok but it will be like the Big East...short lived. The B12 will be gone by 2020.
