RE: "New" App State logo
This new logo of bald Yosef smoking a pipe is already getting plenty of criticism.
Kept reading the additional comments, seemed like @ 50, and not too many complimentary.

Appalachian State unveiled a new logo on Friday.

The news is just now finally making waves, because look at that fella. This is for real. This is the new logo, effective immediately. His name: "Victory Yosef."

Deadspin thought it was drawn by a child.

Appalachian State made the announcement on the Friday after Thanksgiving, perhaps hoping no one would notice.
SportsLogos.net noticed, and put together the helpful before-and-after image above.

I gotta say this new logo looks ridiculous. The only thing it would work for, IMO, are those lick-n-stick tattoos kids wear on their faces to games.

But really, I wouldn't want Popcorn Sutton on my kids face...

70 you are obviously disconnected from our fanbase. This move is a big hit with our own and will drive an increase in merchandise sales.

Agree. Have no idea why unless old chancellor leaving and new one not announced yet and AD Charlie Cobb gave into
a group of his buddies telling him it was a good thing because they invested in some old logo shirts they want to sell.
  • Corn Cob Pipe not appealing to parents, faculty, students.
  • Bald headed Yosef - how will students relate to an old guy secondary mascot.
  • Evil Eye.
  • Jaundiced appearance.
  • Beard or can opener on his face.
  • No mouth.
  • They got rid of it years ago because people said it was offensive.
  • Fan base may prefer it over "Gordon's Fisherman" with snakes coming out of his face, but we can do better, much better.

Little cartoon statue shown looks eerily like this new/old logo:

RE: "New" App State logo
I like it. It's simply adding some history back into our logo catalog. Our main logo is still our block A. For the most part our fanbase loves the retro Yosef and for a secondary logo, what more do you expect? Some people just aren't happy unless they're complaining about something. I agree with a comment that was made either here or on the Mountaineer Message board that the name should have remained "Vintage Yosef" instead of being changed to "Victory Yosef". This would have helped some of these ignorant bloggers understand that it's simply a reclaiming of our past instead of a newly designed logo. Of course, I'm probably giving them a little too much credit in expecting them to actually read past the first 140 characters in an article anyway.

The info on that site is so far off it has no use as a reference. The white block A was introduced in 1989 not 1970, and it hasn't changed since then. The Yosef is originally from 1970 not 2014, and that horrible logo with the mountains and the Gorton's fisherman was never the primary logo. If they can't get basic info correction the site has no credibility.

Look, I get it. The tradition thing. We have it too.

BUT, if you are going to reintroduce something "old," at least come out with a slightly updated version of it.

Sharper lines?
A little more detail?
More than two colors?
More than one eye?

I look at that logo and I can't help but want to go out and rent Saturday Night Fever.

"update tradition"

Say that out loud.

Sounds pretty silly doesn't it.

That is your opinion and you're free to it. Our fanbase likes it, will buy it, and wear it proudly.

Change the debate if you'd like, but you don't update tradition.

I think if you change the "old logo" it ceases to be the old logo and becomes something new.

Take for example the throwback jerseys the Bucs wear in the NFL: It's the same pastel color. The same buccaneer. Same stripes on the helmet. Why? Because it's the old logo being reused.

Soooo, what you're saying is, App Fans don't have a problem with other people snickering at them. Mad props bro. That takes a lot of cojones.

I just don't get how, in this moment when App is looking to the FUTURE of their program, they go and whip out 1971 like it's back in fashion.

I wanna see that!

I've always calledl it the flying skunk logo.

It started out in 1997 as our primary logo, and was quickly relegated to second tier status as the University fortunately embraced the secondary logo.

The logo we have now is one I'm growing on, but at least they've really moved away from the earlier primary logo.

Now that you mention it .... it is kind of skunky.

I liked the Academic Logo, the strutting Eagle logo, all that old stuff. No need to update in my opinion. Worse, there's only so many different ways to draw an Eagle, I think.

It lasted one game. Granted, it was the 1999 Auburn game which we almost won, but still it was a joke and they went to the cartoon with a stuffed belly and grey beard.

In I believe 2008, they sent him to the gym and gave him a beard coloring kit.

What they really should do is have a Mrs Yosef and then a real-life mascot, like a Daniel Boone, who wears an open flannel shirt or at least something showing off the upper body kind of like ECU's human pirate. He can fire the rifle, carry around a moonshine jug and take pictures with drunk coeds feeling him up.

My relatives that are ECU alums hate the "live" pirate, and call him the "Stripper Jack Sparrow." With that said, I'm a big fan of the idea of a "live" Yosef, as we used to have.

  • Corn Cob Pipe not appealing to parents, faculty, students. False--merchandise sales indicate otherwise, as does the Student Yosef Club's use of the vintage Yosef.
  • Bald headed Yosef - how will students relate to an old guy secondary mascot. Um...current Yosef has a long white beard. 07-coffee3
  • Evil Eye. Most mascots look mad/evil.
  • Jaundiced appearance. School color, brosef. Gorton logo was yellow too. 03-lmfao
  • Beard or can opener on his face. 03-lmfao
  • No mouth. 03-lmfao
  • They got rid of it years ago because people said it was offensive. Says who?

There was a lot of happy people when this logo went away the first time.
Had seen a lot of talk over the last few years about people having
merchandise with this logo to sell. Makes you wonder if some people are
making some money they wouldn't make otherwise. Just don't buy a couple of
people's love attachment. So strong they need to get a room.

If this is true and somebody can actually post data supporting those claims, then I guess that is all that matters. However, as an outsider like most not a fan. There is tradition and then there is just a bad looking logo. I guess as an App fan you are going to be biased towards tradition and seeing through mountaineer glasses so I get. I still like the old GaSou logo over the new ones so I guess I may fall into this category as well. Not bashing, JMO, I think App can do better.
