If ECU wins CUSA then I can definitely see a trade between the AAC and CUSA for the Liberty/Belk. I saw a thread on here where a lot of AAC fans were mocking the idea but it's a good thing for the AAC. As for ECU, the fans will still travel to the Liberty Bowl if that's where they end up. I'd say Cincinnati fans for example, would be happier going to the Liberty instead of going to the Belk for another game vs Duke.

Did you not read the thread? CUSA may not even get the Liberty Bowl. They might get bumped like they were in 2011. In which case ECU might end up in Annapolis or maybe they work out a deal to fill a vacant SEC slot against an ACC team in the Independence Bowl.

Why would the American trade the Belk Bowl for the Liberty Bowl when it is likely that the American ends up with both anyway?

We definitely will not end up with both. We are probably only going to have 5 bowl eligible teams.

BCS
Russell Athletic
Belk
BBVA
Pinstripe

That leaves Beef 'O' Bradys already unfilled. The Big East team has only replaced the CUSA team once when Cincinnati did a couple years ago. Why not trade for the Liberty? No matter who is in that spot, its a closer bowl and IMO a better destination. The payout for the Liberty is actually slightly higher than the Belk too.

Why would we trade for the Liberty when it's likely we already have it? It pays more than Birmingham and St Pete. Birmingham and St Pete go empty (presumably to CUSA--so it's sort of a trade) and we take the two higher paying, higher profile bowls (Liberty and Belk).

Based on the Commercial Appeal article, I disagree. If the SEC has only 9 bowl eligible teams, then they'll only be able to fill either the Liberty or the Compass. They would not be able to fill both. The Liberty picks first this year so they will get the last SEC team. Furthermore, the Big East contract stipulates that it must play an SEC opponent in either the Compass Bowl or Liberty. Since the Compass Bowl would not have an SEC opponent, the American would instead bump up to the Liberty. The Liberty would rank above the Compass Bowl due to having an SEC team involved so the Compass would go unfilled.
