I only did Boomers. I had orders to a fast boat (USS Miami) right before I got out, but my back surgery a year prior prevented me from getting cleared to go back to sea.

My dad, my brother and I went and saw her in the summer of 1967 when she arrived at NOB Norfolk. She real damaged. I think she lost 134 crew men.

No. I came aboard 3 years later, in 1970. The fire happened in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1967. They towed it to drydock, repaired it, ran one sea duty tour, and then back in drydock again for extensive renovations.

That was when I came aboard, back when they made you live on board ship in drydock. Yikes. We were all so happy to finally get to sea, you can't imagine. Then they sent us to the Med, at the height of the VietNam War. That made up for the time in drydock.:)

There is (or was) a plaque in the hangar bay listing the names of all 138 (?) who died in the fire. I watched a lengthy film on it. Frightening stuff. Carrier duty is inherently dangerous, anyway, without having ordinance misfire on a crowded flight deck, and blow a huge hole in your ship.

Even in the Med, we lost maybe half a dozen guys to various accidents. But I wouldn't trade anything for my time in the service. At the time, I really didn't appreciate it, or realize what I was a part of. And when I returned home, people back then weren't very appreciative of military folks, to put it politely.

Now, I'm very grateful to have had that opportunity.

They still show the video of the fire in boot camp and in various DC classes for training.

I didn't serve on subs in the Navy, but later on, I was a civilian contractor to the military for 20 years, mostly in shipyards and maintenance depots, and did numerous jobs on boomers and attack subs in shipyards in Portsmouth NH, Norfolk, Charleston and Pearl Harbor, mostly.

I hated subs. Too cramped, after being on a carrier for 2 years. I don't see how anybody could do a 6 month tour on one of those things, without going batsh!t crazy.

I also did a lot of work on destroyers and fast frigates, including the Bainbridge and the Haliburton, both involved in the Somali pirate incident in 2009, that was made into the movie "Captain Phillips."

Every at Goose Creek, SC, where they loaded the nuke missiles? My dad was stationed there for a while.

I rented a house in Summerville one year, a house on Seabrook Island another year, and spent maybe 6 years total in the Charleston area. Other than Hawaii and San Francisco, it was my favorite place to work.

U.S. Army (Active) Nov 24, 2004-Present

Original MOS was 13D (Artillery). I did 6 1/2 years at Fort Bragg, NC. I am now located in New York City as a recruiter. I recently converted to the MOS 79R (U.S. Army Recruiter). Nov 24 will be my 9 year mark, time flies.

I have gotten to do a lot of things in the Military that I would not have done otherwise. Best decision I made for my life personally.

There is a ton of varied MOS, overseas, and in-country experience represented here.

Thanks to all of my fellow veterans, and especially those that are currently serving.

I think that we all came out of our service time as better citizens and our great country benefited from each of your time served.
