RE: AAC teams are 3rd most popular teams in their states
Miami's one of those situations were they have more fans nationally than in their own home state. Back in the late 80s and 90s it was very fashionable to wear Miami apparel-- particularly for fans of Hip Hop. In addition a lot of those same individuals liked their style of play/gangsta image. As a result there are a lot of people in faw away corners of this country who are still fans of the U. I am not sure if any other brand has this same sort of set up.

I agree with what you're saying 100%. Boise St was looking like that Miami team as far as getting national fans, being on TV every game, getting tremendous TV ratings etc. The incredible success they had from 2004-2011 has finally slowed down though, it'll be interesting to see if they can get it back.

Part of the allure of Miami is that they represent freaking Miami. It’s a cool ass city that everyone has heard of and wants to visit, if they haven’t already had the pleasure of doing so. Boise obviously will never have that going for them.

They weren't as popular even within their own city despite starting football in 1926. Saying UCF can't be as popular in Florida displays a lack of foresight.

Yes, in fact UCF is alot closer to Miami in popularity across the state than most people know. According to a poll taken last month regarding Florida's favorite sports teams:

"The Florida Gators came out on top with 22 percent followed closely by the Seminoles at 20 percent. The Hurricanes had 12 percent and UCF 9 percent. FIU, FAU and USF were all stuck at 2 percent."

Of course, there is a 3% margin of error with this poll, and popularity
can change by the season based on a team's record, but based on past polls it still looks like pretty close to a dead heat between UCF and Miami. Here's from 2011:

"Of the major Division I college football programs, the clear darling is the University of Florida at 30%, followed by Florida State (19%), Central Florida (11%), Miami (9%), South Florida (6%), Florida Atlantic (5%), and Florida International (1%). 18% say they are not sure."

As far as overall perception is concerned, this is NC, we NEED great basketball. We need to make national waves. This conference gives us a shot to be placed amongst some elite names: Cincy, UConn, Memphis, Temple and future competitive teams like Houston and SMU. It's up to us to be a contender. We'd also benefit from manufacturing a rivalry or two.

I agree with most of your post.
ECU does NOT need great basketball. It's the only football 1st school in the state. Boise St and TCU are very mediocre in bball but still have cachet bc of football success.

Checklist:
10-2 or better every year.
Beat Cincy 3 outta 4 years (best chance for high profile rival).
U_F teams are already heated rivals of each other, but beat them 3 outta 4 years anyway and get exposure in FL. Would not be a bad thing for them to think of ECU as their 2nd most hated team.

It will be very interesting to see what Miami does now that they have NO "SANCTION Cloud" over their program like they have for the past few years.

With multiple top ten recruiting classes lined up I see Miami becoming like Old Miami sooner rather than later.05-mafia
FlossY out....

But none of the AAC teams represent the Top Team in their state with the exception of UConn.

Might want to amend the top line.

Also I would contend that UT is not even the most popular SEC team in Memphis, so it's no slam dunk there that Memphis is a clear second in their city.

Please tell me you're not insinuating that Louisville somehow maintains a fan base in Tennessee that even remotely challenges UT or Memphis. If so, you should share whatever it is you're partaking of!

Some of you people really need to get a clue. Whether you, or Triple A, think what I said was not clear by itself, when taken in context with what I was responding too, it is VERY clear what I said. I was responding to someone who claimed all of those teams were second and third fiddle in their areas, and giving examples where that was not true. That was what I responded to. I am not sure what is in the water down there, but I now regret actually trying to stick up for you.

Duke basketball is much the same way. You could almost argue Notre Dame is similar, as their alumni base is an hour and a half from campus, and they probably have multiple times more fans nationwide than in their home state, although they probably have stronger local support than the two above to supplement it.

RE: AAC teams are 3rd most popular teams in their states
I have not read over the whole thread yet... I'll read it over tonight, but this is kind of stating the obvious. We're not the SEC, we're not the Big Ten. What we want to be is a really good conference with big schools in great cities. Enough $$$ to make it work, and enough cred that an undefeated team has a chance at a playoff. If we achieve that we'll be just fine.
