#256 is a huge step backwards for Tulane compared to last year.

Pomeroy tracks offensive and defensive efficiency as measured by points per 100 possessions against an average foe.
Under our current coach, we've gotten better every year in offensive efficiency, and worse every year in defensive efficiency. Last year we were one of the worst 75 teams in the country in defensive efficiency.
Obviously, we need a huge turnaround on defense if we want to compete in the American. We did replace 1 assistant in the offseason, hiring the Navarro coach. He had some very good defensive clubs at Navarro. And we have some changes in personnel.
Will that be enough for a huge turnaround on defense? I don't know. But apparently Pomeroy is betting the don't. He rates our offense 122nd and our defense 268th in his preseason poll

Kenpom is computer based..again no surprise on who they have as #1...happens when the you have a school that has a Top Recruiting Class and is returning over 70% of it scoring, assist & rebounding that won it last 19 out of 20 games with it lone defeat being a 5 OT Loss on the Road to another NCAA Tournament team and they happen to be the Defending NCAA Champions...

Its not. He's just using this as yet another platford to remind us Louisville won a National Championship last year.
I can't wait for the season to start.

That is a very good question...he has Kentucky 5th and really with the loss of Goodwin, Noel and the fact that they lost in the 1st Round of the NIT they should not be that high...but they have what many feel is the best class since the Fab Five.

That cool...I been snarky...but I try to base it in fact...but I would like to know that question myself on the recruiting angle.

RE: Kenpom preseason BB rankings out
Over the last 6 years, only 6 teams have earned a NCAA at-large bid with defenses that yielded 100 or more points per 100 possessions against an average foe (Pomeroy's Adjusted Defensive Efficiency metric). Those 6 teams had wonderful offenses.
Bottom line, 97% of the NCAA at-large bids go to teams with efficient defenses holding average teams to less than 100 points per 100 possessions. Like turnovers in football, this is quite simply one major ingredient of success.
Here are Houston's defensive efficiency numbers per Pomeroy under Coach Dickey:
Year 1 - 105.7 points allowed per 100 possessions vs Avg foe
Year 2 - 106.5
Year 3 - 108.0
Coach Dickey's best defensive year isn't anywhere close to 100 points per 100 possesions, and we've gotten worse on defense each year.
Here's what I conclude:
1. Unless we show real progress on defense this year (101.5 points per 100 possessions or better), there is simply no reason to continue with this coaching staff. The "definition of insanity" argument. Why 101.5? That's the national average. If we can't improve to average on defense by year 4, we've got no business keeping these coaches on the payroll.
2. When searching for a new coach, we must focus, as a prerequesite, on coaches who consistently produce defenses that hold average foes to less than 100 points per 100 possessions. Once the list is whittled down to coaches who are effective on defense, then we can search for coaches who also know how to implement an efficient offense at the tempo we desire.
