Why is NIU ranked above UCF?
They were annihilated in their BCS game last year.

Their biggest win is against a severely mediocre and unranked Iowa team. The win against Purdue basically means nothing since Purdue is utterly God-awful.

And the rest of their wins are against really awful MAC teams.

UCF has a win against another average Big 10 team, but a win against a Top 10 UL team, and came up 3 points short of South Carolina, who looks to be in the hunt for the SEC East title.

Where you start off in the polls matter. Why is UL ranked ahead of us? We beat them and they've played nobody.

Why is Fresno State rated in the top 20? Seriously? Why are they rated in the top 20?

It took OT for Fresno to beat Rutgers at home and same thing with SDSU. I don't get it. NIU would probably be the 4th best team in the AAC (Behind UCF, Houston, and UL).

Which is exactly why there should NOT be any polls prior to Week 4, at least. These pollsters throw these teams into the early season top 25, with no justification, and they climb by merit of not really playing anyone.

They beat everyone on their schedule. Coaches poll has them ranked above us, so apparently they are impressed. I would assume the computers like the undefeated team.

Does it matter? We are AQ this year. Stop comparing us to those fighting for the NonAQ At-Large bid

If it were next year I would be really angry. Central Florida has played a tougher schedule with more quality wins than Northern Illinois or Fresno State for that matter. Let's say it was next year and Fresno State got the access bowl spot. The one good thing about Miami bowl is we could have UCF versus Northern Illinois there.

Wait so we didn't like Louisville being ranked based on last years bowl performance, but we are using NIUs against them?

Supposedly next year the selection committee system will weight SOS much more heavily. Hopefully playing in a arguably better league will help us in the new system.

How would our SOS help? Is there some sort of at large spot for those outside of the P5?

Um, no but nice try.

I'm bringing up the bowl game because it is NOT a reason to justify the ranking, which brings me back to the question of: what is? Surely it can't be beating Iowa?

Yes. Each year, the top G5 team (as chosen by the selection committee) will get to play in one of the "host" bowls that are part of the new playoff system (Fiesta, Cotton, or Chick-Fil-A).

Basically a consolation bowl of which what ever team gets in better rout the opposing team from the P5.

There is already a route by which the non-AQ conferences can land a BCS bowl. If they are ranked #12 or higher one nonAQ automatically can qualify for a BCS bowl. If the highest ranking non-AQ is ranked higher than any single AQ champ, then the non AQ need only be ranked #16 or higher to qualify for an automatic BCS bowl slot. These routes only worked for one non-AQ a year. If no Non-AQ team was ranked high enough, then no non-AQ was in the BCS bowls.

Under the new system beggining next year, the highest ranking team from the 5 non-AQ conferences automatically advances to a BCS game. Effectively, the entire G5 is being treated as a single giant AQ conference. The new system guarantees G5 participation in a BCS bowl every year, where the old BCS system did not. it's not great, but it's an improvement.

Makes sense, curious how the skewed the rankings will be once there is no longer a BCS standing?

These things have a way of taking care of themselves....you can only worry about your team not dropping a game along the way.

Agree. Over time the ranking tend to be more right than wrong--though there always seems to be a few instances where you just have to shake your head.

That weighting is why it is so critical all of our programs schedule strong pre-conference games. That weighting will only get more "weighty" when the playoff goes to 8 teams.
