RE: Shut up band
As a former band member myself, they know better. They are lucky they only got a slap on the wrist because the officials could have accessed a penalty against MTSU. I'm actually surprised we don't see stuff like this more often because I see bands push the bounds of when they can and can't play.

If that's what your shallow existence relies on, more power to you.

We've moved on.

Some bands seem to get away with it more than others. Just this year playing against Savannah State, they were playing nearly the entire game but never got called on it.

I'm unaware of any difference in rules between the two.

It doesn't, but he did ask if I had anything better to do. Watching a replay is definitely something better to do.

You're right. There are no rule differences.

Marching Bands
Has anyone else seen this happen during a game?
We all know the band has to stop playing, but some say when the
offense breaks the huddle. This ref mentioned when they get to the line.

RE: Marching Bands
Marshall-Middle Tennessee State game, the Thundering Herd were facing a big third-down play, and the MTSU Blue Raider band was at full tilt. Apparently the ref didn't like that and ruled it unfair to the offense. He blew the whistle, got on the mic and told the band to lock it up.

So college bands, beware of the refs or else you will get yelled at. And if you missed it, MTSU pulled out an amazing 51-49 win with a TD as time expired.

As a matter of fact it happened to us this year when UTC came to Statesboro. Our band got warned and it pissed off every fan in the stadium and got them back into the game. The decibels shot up to 110 at that point and that actually turned the game around at the end of the 3rd quarter.

(It shouldn't have taken that to get our fans involved, but it did)

I did some reading on the rule and in most circumstances the team on offense has to complain about it to the refs before the refs are supposed to warn or flag the band. I guess in some circumstances the refs enforce it themselves, but thats why you'll see it at some games and not at others, its really up to the coach or QB to bring it to the refs attention. Which is also why HBCU's are notorious for playing throughout the whole game because its understood between coaches that its just gonna be that way.
