If you do not understand how degrading, etc. it is for a team to be labeled in such ways you are not a fan with the right expectations.Fight all labels! These categorizations are media creations designed by those with an axe to grind or the ignorant.Fans who accept or promote them are harming their own schools.Ask yourself why do we need these labels?

RE: MBB: College Insider's Mid-Major Top 25 (Preseason)
I have one question for GSU fans...

is it really greatness if no one sees it?

Western was one of the first, if not the very first school, that refused to play in the espn "mid major" games.. bracket busters

There's nothing "mid major" about the below

The 8th-winningest program in NCAA history - 1,679 victories - 41 20-win seasons - 36 Postseason Tournament Appearances - 4 Final Fours - 29 All-Americans.

4 final fours? I count one.

He is counting the NIT Final Fours from when it was the main tourney.

Those aren't Final Fours, but OK...I wish we'd take all the NIT banners down...I guess they could leave up the 2002 Championship but that's it.

The NIT was the main tourney before and is why they are counted.

I don't buy that...

The Helms Athletic Foundation retroactively selected the NIT champion as its national champion for 1938 (Temple), and chose the NIT champion over the NCAA champion once, in 1939 (Long Island).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_In...Tournament

Maybe if it was 1938 or 1939...I do agree that the NIT had much more relevance in the late 30s and early 40s.

You can still that up your butt it was the mid to late 50s before most of the "TOP" schools choose the NCAA tourney over the NIT.

The NIT invited the top 8 schools

If you say so, chief...I know we have an NIT finals from the 50s...but I'm not going to try and claim it as some "Final Four"

Well I say so and I have thousands of hours in researching college basketball and not just Western. There's not many schools (well other than the new ones.15 20 year old schools) that I don't know their history and have file upon files on.

Well hoist the colors and raise a banner at FedExForum then...we have a new final four. 01-wingedeagle

All I have to say, embrace your history because it doesn't matter if its 30, 40, 50, 100 years ago....your school accomplished it at a time when the NIT was just as important as the NCAA today.

One day your f4 from a few years ago will be history and the NCAA might not be the big tourney. That doesn't change the fact Memphis was in it.

When the NCAA expanded to 16 teams from 8 teams in 1952, it began to become the tourney of choice. Until then, the NCAA was an 8 team postseason tourney and most of the time, the top 8 teams weren't even invited. I always like to mention to Kentucky fans that their 1949 NCAA tournament title only had 3 top 10 teams in the tournament that year. I believe WKU was ranked #3 or #4 at the end of the season that year and wasn't in the NCAA tournament.

I don't like when WKU fans say we've been to 4 Final Fours (Sorry fellow Hilltoppers). We've been to the one.

My favorite thing about this mid-major nonsense is when several years ago a player from Xavier was awarded Mid-Major Player of the Week and refused to accept it becuase he said X is not mid-major and niether is he. It was the onyl time I remember ESPN actually debating whether or not mid-major was an insult or not.

Dave weather you like it or not doesn't change the history of Western or the game of college basketball. The NIT had the better teams in their tourney in that era and for the most part the NCAA was today's NIT only both field were stronger because only the top teams played in both....but the NCAA got the pick from the schools left after the NIT made their choice.
