How strong is merketing ESPN when they get everyone to say either Power 5 or Group of 5.
And they were able to make all of this nomenclature stick in less than one off-season.
Wel done, ESPN, well done....

Make sure those guys in marketing get a raise.

I saw it on these boards before I ever heard them say it.

To be honest, I've only ever seen the P5 and G5 referred to on here. I didn't even know it started on ESPN until this post. But I've stopped watching ESPN's crappy talk shows and pre-game shows and will only watch it when sports are on for a few years now. So to me, ESPN's audience is perpetuating this idea just as much as their own programming/marketing.

Yeah of course, but how did ESPN get their fanbase to perpetuate it? Their marketing got that done.

Is it any different than major and mid-major? Not in their eyes.

I wouldn't say it's marketing that got that done. Their domination of the market which has built up over the last couple decades got them there. The lack of legitimate competition(though at least Fox, CBS, and NBC are all trying now) put them in the position of being the only perceptually reputable sports news source. Their viewers eat up their words just like any Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC viewer. If they get enough of their "analysts" to spread an idea, then their viewers are more likely to buy into it and believe it to be a fact.

Yeah, it's more complicated as you point out. But that line is exactly what marketing is. I studied both marketing and advertising, and that's exactly what marketing is. Coming in at the right moment and effectively using your resources to get what you think is best for your business. Both internally and externally. Basically using your resources to get the sale. They did it here and do it pretty dang consistently. Then again, there should be no surprise considering ESPN is a subsidiary of Disney which is the greatest Marketing machine in the world.
