UCF is putting major money into all-sports and we will not go backwards. We will have a budget over $30 million next year and we will have a $250 million dollar arena complex along with a new on-campus stadium along with baseball stadium expansion. We can't afford to go into another small time conference for all-sports.

UCF would take the FB-only membership if offered and hope that it translates to full membership down the road. Which, it probably would. They would not be foolish enough to pass up BE affiliation - a BCS bid and one of the nation's most visible overall sports conferences. To stay in CUSA? Please.

ECU
If the Big East added ECU for FB only, all their other sports would fit nicely into the Colonial. It would be better in the pocketbook for non-revenue sports to play UNC Wilmington and Old Dominion than to play Houston and Tulsa. Besides, Louisiana Tech would probably jump at the chance to replace ECU in C-USA.

We are doing ok in the C-USA. We have 3 games on ESPN and a few more games on CSTV as the national game. My point was to say UCF would not join if only offered a football-only at this point. We have invested large amounts of money into ALL sports that can not go to a small time league like the A-Sun. How many teams have a $250 million dollar arena complex and are looking at going backwards?

Why would you consider football membership to a BCS conference - and a likely all-sports bid in a few years - as going backwards? I can guarantee you that Terry Holland doesn't think that way, and ECU is putting alot of $$$ into their program as well.

CUSA is Memphis and the 11 dwarves in Basketball. Apart from the Tigers, the best programs are UAB, Houston and UTEP, and these are all on par with top mid-majors in leagues like the A-10 and the MVC. UCF would lose little by leaving CUSA and joining the Colonial or Sun Belt or Southern Conference for a few years. All of those leagues had higher RPI's than CUSA this past year if i'm not mistaken. One UCF is affiliated w/ the Big East on any level, it would be a tremendous boost to their program.

Look at how hard Temple was hit when they lost their FB-only membership.

If you really think its fan support and not TV market than you have no idea why the Big East still has its BCS slot. Its the northeastern TV exposure is the only reason. Do you think Cuse really has that good of a following, how about Rutgers and Cincy, how are those teams in following. What they have is a huge TV market and TV markets mean TV contracts and TV contracts mean money.

Quote:The truth is that UCF shot themselves in the foot with their scheduling antics, and those burned bridges are not going to be repaired. Maybe they can apply for Sun Belt membership, since they kept the road game against UL-L but dumped WVU. I guess being in the good graces of the Sun Belt was more important to them. Silly Knights.

I really could care less about what your AD thinks, he sounds like my five year old. I remember WVU's coach saying he did not want anotherh Florida team so they could build up and dominate like Miami did. That is what it comes down to, fear. But I have some news for you, UCF will do fine without the big east and many of us UCF fans want nothing to do with the current state of the Big East. Do your split that we all know is coming in four years, than call us. Any team that takes a football only invite to the Big east does not have a smart AD.

Yeah, market is important. After all, look at all those huge SEC markets. Gainesville.... Tuscaloosa.... Oxford.... Auburn..... Athens.... I mean, wow. Those are major metropolises.

The fact is the program is more important than the market. If you have a strong program, you are going to get attention, no matter where you are located. Who would you rather have, Notre Dame or Toledo?

Toledo, right, since its the bigger market?

I'm sure UCF will be fine in CUSA, but if you think that ANYONE is afraid of UCF then you are simply delusional. Don't kid yourself about a FB-only bid. UCF still has grass-stains on its knees from the last round of Big East expansion. If the Big East crooked a finger in UCF's direction, they would pretty themselves up and come a'running. I understand how you might not like that, but that is simply reality.

You can't argue the point about market size for T.V contracts. UCF is on ESPN at least 3 times this year. I'm not sure how many ECU has but I doubt it is 3 on ESPN. We have the ability to get more sponserships because of our large market too. Lockheed Martin, Disney, etc??? Do you think they have deep pockets?

I think ECU football only is the only option.

Stop bring up Army/Navy partial membership, they don?t want any part of the Big East.
ECU is not the only option but maybe one of best option for today but tomorrow we may have a better option.

On that, we agree.

Well, not really. I could see Memphis as well. But I would prefer ECU at this point.

Right now I'm just referring to UCF and Football-Only and not all-sports. Another point, I think all leagues need to look at becoming more regional. I don't think it makes sense for a league to stretch from New York to Florida. I'm sure a bunch of UCF fans will disagree, but that is my feeling.

One thing that I will say about your shoot from the hip post, which was not very thought out. Syracuse and Rutgers each have a much larger national following right now than UCF could ever hope for. According to a recent study, Syracuse is the 3rd most popular program in the northeast after Penn St. and ND. Every program in the BE has a much larger national following than UCF, with the exception of maybe Cincy and USF, whos following maybe similar in size to UCF. So take that.

As for second bolded area of your post, If you and some other UCF fans want nothing to do with the current state of the BE, then what are you doing here? Why do you have 16 posts here on the BE board?

It seems to me that you were somewhat heated when you wrote your response because there seems to be very little support from the fans here for UCF to get a BE invite. I have some startling news for you. We internet posters have no say as to who will get invited to the BE.

Syracuse has a national following. I seriously doubt there is much difference between Rutgers and UCF if you are talking about a national scale. I bet more people in Missouri and Texas and Michigan and California can name UCF's football coach than Rutger's football coach.

I'm a realist and I know that schools like Pitt, Syracuse, WV, etc have a much larger following, but UCF has only been around since the 70's as a University. We were able to draw over 52,000 for our championship game. We are able to afford the highest paid coaching staff in Florida. UCF will continue to grow and we will have plenty of options down the line. I believe we will have the largest budget in the C-USA this year. I just don't think UCF will go backwards with a football-only so we shouldn't even come up with Big East expansion talks.

What was your average the other games outside the 52k? That one was certainly an outLIAR. You were practically giving tickets away for 2 weeks to the general public in Orlando.

Give me your average minus that game.

Well we had a game that was moved b/c of a hurricane to Friday with still bad weather and people worried about their family over a football. That game only drew 15,000. So why don't toss that game too? and why don't we toss the first few games because we were off a 0-17 streak.

We can add a ECU alumni to the attendance numbers that donated $2.5 million.

Not a UCF fan but taking out only the highest drawing game or games and using that average hardly seems fair. But if you're going to do one than you have to do the other and take away the unusually poorly attendede games. The BIG games are just as much of a teams season as the little ones. For example, Memphis will play Tennessee at Memphis in three of the next five years / games. Every one of those games will probably draw 62,000. 62,000 is MUCH more than we'll draw for ANY other game of the year. Yet, those folks are just as much a part of our average attendence as D1-AA TN-Chatt.

Am I correct in reading that UCF is counting the CUSA Championship game in their "home attendance" figures for the season???

That seems odd....

I know....The MWC now extends from California to Dallas, TX. The sunbelt extends from Miami to Denver Colorado. The Big East extends from Syracuse, NY to Tampa, Fla.

I'd prefer we get regional conferences in the future but that isn't likely.

It did go the the NCAA records as a Home Game. We were the home team for the Championship game with the game played on our field.
