From E$PN:

Quote:Rule 2.00 from MLB rules: OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.

Nothing about intent. Nothing about the base path. By definition, it was obsturction.

But this time it'll be the city that looks stupid, because it was the correct call. I can't wait to see the city of Boston look like a bunch of crybabies.

definitely the right call. Looked like Middlebrooks was trying to trip him

Intent has nothing to do with the call.

yeah i went back and read the rule. You're right, as long as the fielder impedes his progress it will be called obstruction

what is so amazing about the play is that Craig made a horrible base running play. He hesitated when Pedroia got the ball when Pedroia had to go home. In that situation there's no reason why Craig shouldn't have been going full bore there with no hesitation- making it where if they get the lead runner out, he's on 3rd with no issues.

i thought molina had no business breaking for the plate. he had to know if Pedroia gloves it he has no chance to score.

side note: has anyone else notice the complete lack of athleticism in this WS?

I dunno- Pedroia had to make an almost perfect play to get Molina out. But at the point that Craig sees Molina going home, Craig has to go to 3rd.

At least the umpires got it right last night, unlike the botched obstruction non-call involving Tommy Herr during the 1985 World Series.

I don't have any problem with the call. According to the literal interpretation of the rules, the ump made the right call. That doesn't mean I like the call. But them's the breaks...

As somebody that used to umpire, you have to make the call as you see it, and then stick to it. Anything else undermines your authority on the field...

he really didn't. he was out by a mile. But i agree with your overall point, once Molina breaks Craig needs to do the same

RE: MLB Postseason Playoffs 2013 Thread
Has anyone else noticed our horrible and plodding this series has been? These two teams have such a dearth of athleticism, between Gomes, Napoli, Ortiz, Carpenter, Molina, Kozma, beltran, Holliday, Pedroia, etc. In today's society most people don't want to hear this, but baseball needs more black players. There are simply not enough athletes and it makes for a far less exciting game.

Another issue is one that doesn't sound so bad on the surface: there's almost too much good young pitching. In all your years of watching baseball have you ever seen so few guys throw fastballs below 90? The hitting talent is simply being overwhelmed by a glut of overpowering pitching. Remember the days when a lefty like Mike Minor was considered a hard thrower? Today he seems almost average. Again, it sounds great, but the result is a lack of hitting. Did you know Hunter Pence was 4th in the NL in HR? That's crazy and it's definitely coming to the point where MLB needs to do something. The first step is to add the DH to the NL. Obviously that should be done anyway, but this is just another reason to do it. I'll create a thread about this topic so we don't have to discuss it in the playoff thread.

I think the pickoff play by Uehara is the first time a World Series game has ever ended in that fashion. It's been an interesting Series so far, to say the least...

Yeah Bah-ston! Yeah Science!

(Makes no sense, just wanted a Jesse Pinkman reference in there, without using his favorite word.)
