Swinney talks about faking injuries
http://www.tigernet.com/story/football/S...call-11970

Quote:A clip made the rounds and became a bit of a viral sensation Sunday, showing a Georgia defensive player look to the sideline, then fall to the ground with an injury. Many have said that Georgia’s players were faking injuries during Clemson’s 38-35 victory Saturday night, and head coach Dabo Swinney said someone sent him the clip.

Quote:"You know, I don't know. Someone sent that clip to me today,” Swinney told the media during his Sunday afternoon teleconference. “I’ll let others speak on that. I'm not worried about that. We just have to execute and worry about that. I don't try to get into second-guessing that stuff. You are getting into ethical behavior there. If you really aren't injured and have guys do down that gets into ethics of game.”

Maybe instead of SEC speed they need to be talking about the "SEC Flop"

What advantage is there to faking an injury 5 minutes into the game? Save a timeout for later? Let your team rest? I can understand why in the final minutes of the game but that early? Why?

ESPN was discussing this before the game - that they believed some SEC teams were planning on faking injuries whenever they play a team that runs the hurry-up/no-huddle offense (to slow the pace). So this tactic was already anticipated.

RE: Swinney talks about faking injuries
A few years ago I saw a team (Marshall?) run a faux huddle. They could go from what appeared to be a real huddle to down, set and snap in ~2-3 seconds.

I don't know how you combat something like this. Instead of coming out of the game for 1 down you could require the player to come out for 10 or 15 minutes. This would be hard to enforce/track. Hockey seems to be able to track multiple players in the penalty box.

I think it allows the defense time to make substitutions they would not otherwise have time to make.

RE: Swinney talks about faking injuries
Wake Forest faked a number of injuries during their game with Carolina last year. Even the Wake fans started to laugh every time one of their players went down. It was such a coincident that those Wake players got hurt just before a critical third down play.
The tactic worked, however. The Deacs were able to throw the Carolina offense out of rhythm multiple times (8-10 fake injuries) and won the game.

The funny thing is it can cost a defense too, because it allows an offense to make adjustments they might not have been able to make otherwise.

In the game winning drive against LSU in the Chick-fil-a during one of the many injury stoppages Clemson TE Brandon Ford suggested using a particular play because of something he was seeing in the way the LSU secondary was covering him. The play he suggested? The big 4th down conversion to Nuk Hopkins.

Oh, and Richt claimed in his teleconference yesterday that the player in the clip was really hurt two plays before that when he took a leg whip to the groin. I guess it took him looking to the sideline and being reminded by a teammate before he realized he was injured.

Dunno about anybody else but the times in life I have taken a groin shot it didn't take a few minutes for it to become incapacitating enough for me to fall to the ground with the dramatic flair of an actor in a 3rd grade school play.

Any player who claims to be injured on the field and stops the normal flow of the game will be required to head to the locker room for a full medical evaluation by both teams' medical staffs.

a) If the player is declared fit to play by both teams' medical staffs, then the player may return to the sideline. Once the player has returned to the sideline, they will be required to wait 10 minutes before they may re-enter the game.

b) If a player is declared unfit to play by one or both teams' medical staffs, then the player may not return to the game.

c) Any player who claims a second injury in a game will be prohibited from re-entering the game.

I don't blame teams for faking injuries at all. In fact, I'd do the same thing if I was in their shoes. I think the hurry-up is basically cheating and is no more ethical than faking injuries to slow down play.

I also think it is absurd when officials run up to the ball to spot it. That gives the offense a clear advantage for no good reason.

Agreed - as long as it isn't against the rules, go for it.

Quote:I think the hurry-up is basically cheating and is no more ethical than faking injuries to slow down play.
Why do you think it's cheating? You are simply forcing the other team to continue playing without substitution or a defensive huddle. So?

Quote:I also think it is absurd when officials run up to the ball to spot it. That gives the offense a clear advantage for no good reason.
But aren't they SUPPOSED to run to spot the ball anyway?
