I think this move saved the game for years to come. Even if going to 9 conference games, TV will keep it alive.

It won't matter, as long as we have Charlie it will be a nice Thanksgiving break.

Playing each other on Thanksgiving Weekend (possibly that Friday afternoon) will raise the profile of that rivalry nationally. It will be a WAY bigger deal than if the two teams were to play on Labor Day weekend on something like that. Now, the two programs have to do their parts too and make the game meaningful. However, they each appear serious about doing just that.

I really welcome this news as well as the SEC news about Mizzou/Arky and LSU/TAMU (which I did not know). That all adds up to better television viewing for people like us.

Now, if we could just get Penn State to agree to again play Pitt every year on Thanksgiving Friday - as they did for decades before the old man killed it - I think we'd be pretty much set. Alas, I don't see that happening. I think Miami will become Pitt's annual Thanksgiving weekend opponent. That's cool but it's not the same as PSU or WVU.

There would need to be another B1G-ACC rivalry for it to work for scheduling purposes and I don't know how they can work it out.

Because Jim Delany refuses to schedule ANY out of conference games after like the 2nd week of October. It's part of the Big Ten's "charm and tradition."

I say f*ck'em and just schedule the hoopies every Black Friday...

Has UK gotten so bad that we call a 1-52 record versus Florida and Kentucky since 1986 progress?

Since the Governor's Cup was picked back up in 1994, Louisville leads Kentucky 11 wins to 8 wins. Not a very impressive record against an FCS team, I'd say 04-cheers

Just win baby! I will point out that Kentucky was suppose to be an SEC team. playing a Louisville team that was an Independent, then CUSA, and finally a Big East team. Now the playing field is fair, Louisville is ACC and P5, also. The trend has shifted in our favor! 07-coffee3

I'll admit I'm pretty surprised by this. Figured Kentucky and Tennessee would want to both continue with that one. Works out nicely overall though.

Sadly, the Big Ten is getting away from this. Ohio State has a conference game week 1 in 2017 (Indiana) and it sound like they want more games in September, but existing out of conference schedules limit those possibilities. Personally, I'd rather always play the 4 (soon 3) out of conference games before any Big Ten games, but I don't mind if other schools feel act differently for a rivalry.

I hope this is the best of both worlds for us.....we beat UK every year at Thanksgiving for their fans, gives us an opening at beginning of year to schedule a "made for tv" kickoff game, and it puts an end to thinking the SEC/UK were going to cancel this game based on their scheduling changes.

In addition, its nice to have a bye week before the ACC champ game every year!

Very interesting quote from you article:

"“I have been a huge proponent that the game should be played as the first game every year,” said UofL Vice-President/Director of Athletics Tom Jurich. “I’m disappointed that it will not be our opening game in the future, but most importantly, we will continue to play the game. We’ll support the move at the request of both conferences and we are very excited about our future in the ACC. I’m sure that fans across the Commonwealth will be pleased to see the series continue.”

That makes it sound like it was the conferences themselves that wanted the game moved then. My guess is they were both looking at schedules and figured it was easier in the end if that game was played the final week. It would seem odd for the conferences to push the schools on the date though.

They don't want anyone having a bye before the championship game. They already have three cross-conference rivalries going on that weekend so each conference would need an ooc opponent that weekend. The Wake/Vandy series has served that role but now it's easier if Louisville/UK do and then Wake is free to play NCSU and Vandy/UT. That way everyone in both conferences have games set for rivalry weekend and it is not a scramble to find a opponents every year.

Implying that UK is a bye and UL will be in the ACC CG regularly? 03-drunk

Side thought: I know UL fans won't want to hear it but it's possible UK is as good as UL as soon as 2014. (Moderate step back post-Bridgewater and moderate step forward post-Stoops.)

That's so awful. Nobody cares about UNC/Duke or NC State/Wake. Make it so the two state schools square off and the two privates do, too.

Maybe, maybe not.

The Egg Bowl is a good rivalry between two usually non-good teams. UK nor UL need to have high levels of sustained success for it to be a watchable, relevant rivalry game.

I'd pretty much guarantee it will be on Thursday or Friday when there are less games played. I hope no one in charge is actually proposing it go head-to-head with some of the more storied rivalries on Saturday.

I don't agree with Marge Schott often, but this time I do

ACC/SEC rivalry week games

FSU - Florida
GT - Georgia
Clemson - USCe
Louisville - Kentucky

ACC rivalry week games

VT - UVa
UNC - NCST
SU - BC
Duke - Wake
Miami - Pitt

And as someone pointed out on the Syracuse Board, the icing on the cake would be:

Pitt - PSU
Miami - ND

Not that it's going to happen, but that icing would be mighty tasty. 03-wink

Cheers,
Neil

You should avoid cross-division games as much as possible. Having teams play back-to-back like the Pac12 did is going to be horrible for championship game attendance and ratings.

So Wake/NCSU and UNC/Duke make the most sense.

Notre dame plays in CA during rivalry week.

RE: Louisville-Kentucky Football Game moved to Rivalry Weekend...
I think it's an acceptable risk to let UNC/NCSU and Duke/WFU play each other in rivalry week... I'll take my chances that neither of those pairs end up in the ACC CG at the same time.

As for Pitt & Miami: playing each other definitely feels like leftovers. Pitt should play either Penn St or WVU that week (WVU is very doable, PSU is a maybe at this point). That leaves Miami...

FSU, Florida & Notre Dame are Miami's traditional rivals - all are off the table. Any G5 team is too anti-climactic. So thinking outside the box, how about a Big XII school to balance out Pitt/WVU? How would Oklahoma or even Oklahoma State sound for that week (I think those 2 play each other during Championship Week)? Could also go with one of the Texas schools. Please, no Kansas, K State, or Iowa State!

If none of that pans out, I guess the ACC will just have to invite USF and UC, setting up Pitt/UC and Miami/USF... 05-stirthepot

This way there are still 10 teams left over in the SEC and ACC during the last week for scheduling purposes. I guess with Maryland leaving it's a little easier now to figure out end of year rivalries for the ten remaining teams. You have Virginia-Virginia Tech, North Carolina-Duke, NC State-Wake Forest, Syracuse-BC, and then Pitt-Miami to go along with the four SEC-ACC in state rivalries.

While I'm extremely pleased to get BC as a season ender, if Pitt and BC switched divisions, we could have SU-Pitt and BC-Miami as season enders, which may make more sense for Pitt and Miami, and which I believe SU and BC would be cool with as long as they're cross over rivals.

Pitt-WVU might be a more realistic likelihood. Notre Dame, though, plays USC or Stanford in alternating years that weekend. I don't see that changing.

Yeah a couple of months ago coming out of the ACC meetings in May we all got word that they wanted to have a rivalry week of games, and that came from the conference officials not the school officials.

RE: Louisville-Kentucky Football Game moved to Rivalry Weekend...
As a UL fan, yeah its fun to have as the first game of the season for offseason hype, but it can also be fun to see on rivalry weekend, as long as we don't get a completely lousy tv timeslot/channel. If its noon on ESPN, or maybe 3:30 on ESPN2 or even CBS if played at UK then that would be great. A silly 11:00am or stuck on an off channel just to get 7pm will not make people happy.

As for the actual game, right now it could be UK's bowl game/spoiler game, and down the road if we're both playing well it could have some implications on the 4 team playoff. For the moment objectively speaking, I can't say that I'm speaking for UK trying to get in to the 4 team playoff, but for UL if we are ranked high enough, and UK is having a good season and ranked, then that game for UL beating a ranked SEC opponent late in the season could go a long way for us.

For UK they could play the Pitt role from a few years ago when they knocked off WVU as #1/2 at the time...so there will be some fun with the game on this weekend.
