RE: Former TXST AD Thinks They Have No Business Being FBS
When he was AD SWT was a 20K enrollment party school in central Texas with a lousy athletics program all the way around. He did nothing to improve on that and left when the town was small and nobody cared one bit what was going on in SM.
TXST has an equivalent enrollment to Mizzou (Fall 2012 - Mizzou 34,748, TXST 34,339) and is on the rise. The U has more than half a billion in construction going on. The football team is making strides. Baseball is a known commodity thanks to Harrington and Paul Goldschmidt. We are an emerging research university whose endowment exceeded expectations in 2012.
No aspirations to be UT but had outgrown where we were, FCS. We are in the Sun Belt, a good place to be for TXST. Mizzou is in so far over their heads (in the SEC) they'll never see daylight.

And his head is in so far up (his SEC arse) that he'll never see daylight.

RE: Former TXST AD Thinks They Have No Business Being FBS
"I'm thinking, "It is so much different at Texas than it is at Texas State. Why should we even imagine that we should be Division I-A?" The answer generally that you'll see is that we want to associate with I-A so we can look like them. We can get the afterglow effect, the ability to be able to be touched by it. So when you saw that happen and when you saw Louisiana-Monroe saying, "This is what we need to do," when you saw Arkansas State saying, "This is what we need to do" and you saw UT-San Antonio. And again, that's not to offend them. That's just the reality of that.
There couldn't be anything more different than night and day between Texas State and the University of Texas. "
What a bombastic jerk. The afterglow effect? The ability to be touched by it. Does he think there is something magical about Missouri or the P5. These schools happened to be mainly at the right place at the right times. We do not need to be around them to get the radiant magical glow from being in their divine presence.

After I saw and read this the ******* in me couldn't let it slide so I had to send him an email. Apparently I wasn't the only one, because to my surprise he actually replied back.

Just read your article where you talk down on and belittle TXST University. As an alumni I think it's a a shame you forget where you came from and then go pop off about the school that helped get you where you are today. I think you need to do your research and look up the school you once worked for before knocking everything it's become. We are no longer a directional school with big hopes and dreams. We are 35,000 + strong with Tier 1 status in sight .............. I go on blah blah blah

Thank you for your email, Cajuncat. I appreciate you taking the time to write.
You are correct....I should NOT have made those comments about Texas State and in comparison to UT. That was not appropriate and I certainly apologize. I actually called Larry Teis this morning to offer my apologies on my comments.
I am a BIG fan of Texas State. President Trauth is doing an outstanding job in her leadership in San Marcos, and Larry Teis continues to do excellent work as the Director of Athletics. The growth that we have seen in the academic, research and undergraduate experiences at Texas State has been remarkable.
During our time at Texas State, my wife(Rockie), son(Jake)and I had a terrific experience. We loved living in San Marcos and Central Texas and being a part of Texas State. Jerry Supple, Jim Studer, Bill Nance, Paul Gowens, Joanne Smith and many, many others had a tremendous impact on our professional and personal development.
I hope you'll accept my apology. We wish all the best for Texas State now and for many, many years to come.
Mike Alden

That was polite of him to reply back, but it's all for nothing if he doesn't publicly retract his statement. That won't happen.
I have been to several games at Faurot Field at Mizzou, Texas, and Texas State and I can honestly say that Missouri has a lot more in common with Texas State than they do with Texas. There about 10 schools that can compare themselves to Texas (Florida, ND, Alabama, USC, Michigan, Ohio State, etc). The rest of the schools (Missouri, Baylor, Indiana, etc) have no business comparing themselves to Texas or Alabama simply because they share a conference.

It should be noted that he did copy Teis, Trauth, and Sandy Matthew to his reply. It should also be noted that I did email back and accept his apology.

My first thought after reading the headline was "That's probably why he isn't the AD there anymore."

It's kind of ridiculous to downplay Mizzou being in the SEC, though. I don't understand why you say Mizzou has more in common with Texas State than Texas. Even bottom of the barrel BCS teams are pissing money that Sun Belt teams can only dream of.

Regardless of his apology, those were damning words of a pompous nature.
Akin to the thoughts of many "big time" programs.

Pompous nature? No the guy just sounds like a weasel and a jerk. That's the cleanest way I can think to describe it. Of all the non BCS schools he picks the one he use to be employed by.

So does GaSouth have aspirations of being Ga Tech or UGA? Of basking in their afterglow? I thought not. And neither does TXST with any other TX university.

I think the Mizzou AD should make it up them by scheduling Texas State.

Look at the budgets of the schools. Missouri has around a $60 million budget, TxSt has around a $25-30 million. Big difference I agree, but when you compare either school to a Texas with a $130+ million dollar budget both schools are found lacking.

I don't think anyone is downplaying the value of being in the SEC vs. the Sun Belt.
But I'd argue that Mizzou is basking in the afterglow of Alabama, LSU, & Texas A&M than Texas State is basking in the afterglow of UT.
We don't get a shiny nickel from the name of UT. Quite to the contrary, it hinders us. Meanwhile, Mizzou is pissing that money you referenced DIRECTLY due to Texas A&M, LSU, etc.
Mizzou would be welcomed in most any other conference, but their budgets and their abilities would suffer if they weren't getting in the SEC.
